The Ph.D. Program in Basic Psychology at the University of Minho focuses on the study of the basic mechanisms of behavior and cognition. The program’s strengths rest on the distinguished history of the School of Psychology of the University of Minho and, in particular, of its Basic Psychology Department. This is the only department in the country exclusively dedicated to the investigation and teaching of fundamental psychological processes.
The Ph.D. Program is designed for applicants with a strong interest in research and with a solid training in the scientific bases of Psychology and/or related areas, such as Biology, Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, and Mathematics.
The early student immersion in the research activities of cutting-edge laboratories, and individually tailored course requirements are the two distinctive features of the Ph.D. Program. Research activities are mainly carried out throughout the 6 semesters in the four laboratories that support the program: the Human Cognition Laboratory, the Animal Learning and Behavior Laboratory, the Neuropsychophysiology Laboratory and the Laboratory of Visualization and Perception. Courses, conferences, and meetings are held in English.
