The Doctoral Programme in Political Science and International Relations is a proposal of advanced training/education which accommodates the Bologna paradigm. It aims at responding to the demands of fundamental and applied research in the fields of Political Science and International Relations.
Hence, it is an innovative and comprehensive programme, which endows students with methodological and theoretical up-to-date training. It draws on scientific rigour, while seeking to achieve the following specific objectives:
- to offer an advanced studies pogramme which consolidates the skills required to develop research;
- to prepare doctoral students for conducting independent and original scientific research in a branch of knowledge in the field of Political Science and International Relations;
- to contribute to the progress of theoretical and applied knowledge.
This programme is organised in two distinct phases: it combines coursework, lectured in the two initial semesters totalling 60 ECTS, and the research component dedicated to the preparation of the doctoral thesis, whose completion accounts for the remaining six semesters totalling 180 ECTS. Doctoral candidates acquire a unique academic and professional profile which allows them to develop and realise the most demanding proposals and policies in this field, as well as solve complex challenges and dilemmas.
This Doctoral Programme was audited and accredited unconditionally by A3es-Agency for the Evaluation and Accreditation of Higher Education, in 2014.
The high merit of the programme is also ensured by a widely recognised faculty staff with PhD degrees awarded by prestigious national and international institutions and with educational/research experience in the area. All faculty members integrate the Research Centre in Political Science (CICP), a R&D unit at EEG/UM ranked as "Excellent" by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).
