At the University of Auckland, International PhD students pay the same fees as New Zealand students. The University of Auckland offers a PhD degree in 100 different subjects, in the areas of the arts, business, education, engineering, science, law, medical and health sciences, and creative arts (such as architecture, dance, fine arts, music and urban planning).

As a research-led university, the University of Auckland places a lot of emphasis on the research roles of our academic staff and postgraduate students. The University supports the work of over 60 research units, centres and institutes including two internationally-renowned Large Scale Research Institutes: the Liggins Institute and the Auckland Bioengineering Institute.

Internationally, the University is a member of three prestigious research-led university consortia: Universitas 21, the Association of Pacific Rim Universities and the Worldwide Universities Network.   • You can apply for a University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship which covers fees plus an annual stipend of up to NZ$25,000 for recipients.

Degree structure

Directed by an appointed supervisor, the PhD programme is three to four years of full-time research, which you must present in a thesis to be assessed by external examiners. Many students publish aspects of their research while enrolled for their PhD. This is encouraged, but not required. Publications done under supervision for the PhD may be included in the thesis.

Academic requirements

Candidates for PhD study at the University of Auckland are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Generally, you must have completed the equivalent of a masters degree with first class or second class honours from a recognised institution, but the University can admit candidates with a bachelors honours postgraduate degree or postgraduate diploma if there is evidence of exceptional academic merit.

You will need to submit the following for your application to be assessed:

  • Relevant academic transcripts and the grading scale for the university where you have studied.
  • Statement of Research Intent
  • CV or résumé
  • If English is not your first language, any approved English language test scores from the last two years
  • Some programmes may also require a creative portfolio.

English requirements

To be eligible for entrance, international students must achieve:

  • Academic IELTS 6.5, with no band less than 6.0
  • or
  • TOEFL (paper-based) 575 (TWE 4.5)
  • or
  • TOEFL (internet-based) 90 (written 21)
