Doctoral Leadership Development Program
The Telfer School of Management doctoral program emphasizes candidates’ holistic development, with personal and professional needs discussed on an ongoing basis between the student and his/her supervisor(s), in consultation with the Program Director and academic and professional mentors (see below).
Many workshops and activities focused on personal and professional development take place throughout the PhD program, some delivered through the Doctoral Leadership Development Program – others offered as part of the Altitude Program, developed by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (FGPS) and the Teaching and Learning Support Service (TLSS). Graduate students and Postdoctoral fellows will develop the professional skills that will help them integrate and thrive in the workplace.
For example, workshops, seminars and retreats might focus on case teaching, “writing a lot,” grant writing, project (thesis) management, working in multi-disciplinary and diverse teams, getting published, effective networking, getting the most out of doctoral symposia, critical and creative thinking, and effective mentor-mentee relationships. Students are also periodically invited to Telfer executive networking events. Several workshops will focus on students’ teaching abilities such as a teaching practicum and pedagogy.
Activities on personal growth might cover work-life balance, stress management, personal finance, leadership skills, time management, effective communication, and interpersonal skills.
In response to the growing demand for multidisciplinary research encompassing traditional areas of management, we offer two multidisciplinary fields (Entrepreneurship and Health Systems), and all students, regardless of specialization, will examine the multidisciplinary nature of management decision-making. In all fields, Telfer students push beyond the traditional knowledge boundaries and incorporate thorough economic, financial, organizational, psychological or sociological knowledge into their work.
The core doctoral curriculum will embrace emerging and sometimes conflicting paradigms including sustainability, responsible management and the need to balance environmental, economic and social outcomes. Ethical management issues will be highlighted across the program.
Students and faculty members consistently benefit from the dedicated Research Office and its personnel, who provide invaluable support and services to help researchers find funding, prepare grant applications, develop their skills, etc.
Management Research Seminar Series
The Telfer School of Management is lucky to host several Research Talks every year. We currently host three research seminars series: Management Research Seminar Series, Health Systems Research Seminar Series, and Research Challenges Seminar Series. These seminars bring together leading academic scholars, business leaders, hospital executives and policymakers from universities, corporations, governments, research institutes, think tanks, embassies, and major health institutions from around the world to engage our students and professors in presentations and discussion on key issues.
We will invite all doctoral students to make at least one thesis-related presentation to the Telfer School of Management Research Seminar Series before undertaking the Thesis Proposal. They will also be invited to present in the seminar series prior to a conference presentation. These forums will let students present thesis proposals and other research work, and obtain valuable feedback from professors and their peers.
We strongly recommend our teaching practicum for all Telfer School of Management PhD students interested in an academic career. First, we invite them to shadow their major professor and other faculty members through teaching assistantships and guest lectures. Then they are strongly encouraged to enrol in the University of Ottawa’s Certificate in University Teaching, which is specially designed for graduate students wanting to gain an advantage in their academic careers.
Our PhD program is full-time only, not a distance education program. All students must complete the minimum six sessions of full-time registration at the beginning of the program or nine sessions in the case of students fast-tracked from the master’s.
Accounting and Control
Accounting & Control investigates the questions facing accountants, controllers and financial managers, among others. Students examine reporting, accountability, internal/external controls, regulations, governance requirements and practices, international performance measurement, compensation, risk management and intellectual capital measurement. We expect all students to understand accounting processes and assimilate current issues in accounting practice – but Telfer students also push beyond the boundaries of traditional accounting, incorporating a thorough economic, financial, organizational or sociological perspective into their work on contemporary accounting issues.
To be considered for admission, applicants must:
Hold a master’s degree with thesis in a relevant discipline. Each field has articulated its own list:
Accounting: Accounting or Finance;
Note: Exceptionally, applicants holding a master’s degree without thesis may be considered provided their file includes scholarly publications or equivalent evidence of their capacity for advanced research. Students whose master’s degree was not in a related discipline may be required to take up to 9 credits of additional courses beyond those normally required for the PhD in Management.
Have a minimum A- (80%) cumulative grade point average (CGPA);
Submit their results in the Graduate Management AdmissionTest (GMAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), scoring at least in the 80th percentile.
Show English proficiency;
An interview with the admission committee or a member thereof may be required.

Any document not written in English or French must be accompanied by an official translation in English or French. Note: The selection committee will not consider applications without all the required documents.
GMAT or GRE
The PhD requires one of the two following Admission Tests:
Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT): a minimum overall score of the 80th percentile.
Graduate Record Examinations® (GRE®): students should aim for at least the 80th percentile on each of the individual components.
N.B. The GMAT or the GRE® is mandatory and this admission requirement will not be waived.
Candidates whose first language is not English must submit ONE of the following to confirm their English proficiency (the test scores cannot be more than two years old as of September 1 of the year of potential entry into the program):
A score of at least 100 on the internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The TOEFL is administered by Educational Testing Service, www.toefl.org.
A score of at least 7 in at least three of the four International English Language Testing System (IELTS) rubrics (Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking) and at least 6 in the fourth. The IELTS is administered by the British Council: www.ielts.org.
Proof of completion, within the last five years, of a previous degree program in an English language university.
Proof of recent prolonged residence and employment in an English speaking country (normally at least four of the last six years).
A score of at least 4.5 on the CanTEST , administered by the University of Ottawa, with no individual test score below 4.5, along with a score of 4.5 on the oral component of the test.
A score of at least 68 on the Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE Academic).
