The intensive, research oriented Ph.D. programme is taught by internationally respected scientists.It is designed for highly qualified students who have studied forestry, wood sciences, biology, biochemistry, microbiology, chemistry etc. To assure a high standard individual training, the number of participants in the programme is limited to 12 students per year.Within the PhD-programme every student mainly works on his or her special research project. He or she becomes part of one of these science groups and is supervised by one of the leading professors. According to the new study regulations each student has two additional tutors (professors) who usually become the co-examiners at the oral exam. PhD-students are entitled to suggest these two persons for this task. One of these persons can be a professor from another university.The students are expected to be able to work and research independently and finally present a major scientific contribution to their field of specialisation. Aside of research work successful applicants have to take part in lessons and practical courses which shall prepare them for leading management positions in the woodworking industry and in research institutes. All compulsory courses are taught in English. The programme is member of the "Georg-August University School of Science" (GAUSS).   Research Topics One major focus of the ongoing research lies on reducing the main technical disadvantages of wood in use: its limited resistance to fungi and insects, its disposition to swell and shrink and its instability to UV-radiation. The research groups in Göttingen are developing different new approaches to overcome these technical disadvantages: acetylation, modification with organic silicon compounds, coatings, heat treatment, enzymatic activation etc. Another field of research are enzymes involved in wood decay, for example lactases and other redox-enzymes that are of potential use for the wood industry. However, all other topics in the scope of wood science and wood technology can also be dealt with. The PhD dissertation can be submitted in English or in German either in the traditional form of a dissertation or as a cumulative collection of several publications. The intensive, research-oriented education qualifies the students for professional work in the fields of molecular and cellular biosciences. The Molecular Biology Program is also recognized and funded as an International Max Planck Research School. The program is open to students from Germany and from abroad, who hold a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent degree) in the biosciences, chemistry, medicine, or related fields. All courses are held in English. Scholarships are available. The academic year starts in mid-October, preceded by three weeks of orientation. Applications are welcome until January 15th of the year of enrollment. Admission is only possible to the first segment of the program, not directly to the PhD program. Applicants interested only in a PhD project should consider applying to one of the Göttingen PhD programs in related disciplines (see participating institutions). The first segment of the program comprises lectures, tutorials, seminars, methods courses, and independent research projects (laboratory rotations). Special emphasis is placed on an all-round advisory service in both academic and extracurricular activities. For this service concept, the Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs awarded the program with the 2004 prize for excellent support services for foreign students at German universities. In October 2006, the Molecular Biology Master's program was awarded the label "Top 10 International Master's Degree Courses made in Germany". The award was granted by "Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft" together with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in a national contest, in which 121 Master's programs of 77 universities participated. Brief Description

The focus of this study programme is on the foundations and the evolution of nonhuman and human primate behavior. Research projects are undertaken in the fields of psychology, anthropology and evolutionary biology, with an emphasis on comparative approaches. Core areas are the evolution of social behavior, group behavior and group coordination, developmental psychology, as well as the cognitive and physiological foundations of behavior. The programme is run by the Faculty of Biology and Psychology of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, the Courant Research Centres „Evolution of Social Behaviour” and „Text structures" and the German Primate Center. Interdisciplinary collaboration and exchange are an important element of this study program.Doctoral students are affiliated with one (or sometimes two) of the research groups of this programme. Each project is supervised by a three-member thesis committee. The exchange across groups and disciplines is fostered by the integration of the doctoral students into the Courant Research Centres „Evolution of Social Behaviour” and „Text structures" funded by the German Initiative of Excellence. This internationally designed course of study is held in English and is intended to lead graduates of agricultural science to a doctorate degree in three years. It is aimed towards German and international students with an international study focus on their research activities.In the first year of studies, the courses concentrate on modules that prepare the contents and methods of the research. In the second year, doctoral candidates may return to their home country to acquire the data necessary for their work. Field research is accompanied on site in seminars at partner universities.
