PhDs in Chemistry. PDEng in Process and Product Design (PPD) TU/e offers two-year (post-Master's) designer's programs. Like a doctoral candidate, you will have the status of TU/e employee if you are selected for one of these programs. The programs start with a year of advanced education, followed by a major design project of eight to twelve months in a company. The designer's programs lead to a Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng degree). These programs are given under the banner of the Stan Ackermans Institute. The institute has operated since mid-2006 on behalf of the three universities of technology in the Netherlands as the 4TU.School for Technological Design, Stan Ackermans Institute. Process and Product Design (PPD) The process industry demands an integrated approach to chemical and physical processes. In PPD designers learn to build bridges between theory and practice. CCTO Certification This program is recognized as a PDEng program by the CCTO, the Dutch certification institute for technological designer programs. Admission and application Application is open to university graduates from the Netherlands and other countries. You will at least need a Master of Science degree or equivalent, preferably in the exact sciences. There will be an assessment and selection procedure before you can enter the PDEng program. The PDEng programs use strict selection criteria to ensure the required high quality. Excellent marks, motivation and a design-oriented attitude are vitally important. You should also have an excellent command of the English language. Selection You can apply by sending your letter of application with a complete curriculum vitae and at least two letters of recommendation (in English). Suitable candidates will be invited for an interview with the selection committee of the relevant PDEng program. Students must demonstrate a breadth of understanding over the many areas of chemistry, a perspective of the relation of chemistry to other fields and expertise in the area chosen for dissertation research. We expect most students to complete their PhD programs in four years. Proficiency in a specialized area is established by cumulative examinations (commonly referred to as "cums"), offered 10 times a year in any of the following areas: analytical, inorganic, organic, or physical chemistry. Students are required to pass three out of eight of these exams in their major fields. The examinations may cover virtually any subject within the defined area, and provide the graduate curriculum committee with an assessment of the student's growth as a chemist. These exams begin no later than the second year of residence. A student may, together with the his or her faculty adviser, prepare a proposal, with justification, for an alternative comprehensive examination, and submit the proposal to the graduate curriculum committee for its approval. If approved, the research adviser and the student nominate a guidance committee of at least five faculty members, including at least one tenured chemistry faculty member who is not the dissertation research adviser, with a nominated chairman who is not the dissertation research adviser. After approval by the graduate curriculum committee, the guidance committee becomes responsible for administering a comprehensive examination of the approved format, and for monitoring the student's progress toward the degree. On completion of the "cums," each student takes an oral examination before a thesis committee, which uses this examination to determine whether the student has developed to the point where independent research can be appropriately carried out. Satisfactory completion of this examination is the final hurdle before completion of research and the presentation of a thesis. The most important and time-consuming component of the PhD program is, of course, the research. Each student is required to complete a significant piece of scientific inquiry, write a thesis describing the work and the conclusions to be drawn from that work, and then defend the worked before a committee of chemistry and non-chemistry faculty. Biological Chemistry and Biochemistry Track The graduate program in biological chemistry and biochemistry is a program for students wishing to specialize in the chemistry of biological systems. Students entering this program take a biochemistry placement examination in lieu of an organic, inorganic or analytical placement examination. In addition, a separate set of cumulative examinations is given, and students may count an additional course outside the department toward the minimum six to eight courses necessary for the PhD degree. Materials Chemistry Track An interdisciplinary graduate program in materials chemistry has been approved by the faculty. Students may take a materials and solid-state placement examination in lieu of the organic and analytical placement examinations. Relevant cumulative examinations are given, and courses outside the department are required toward the minimum courses necessary for the MS and PhD degrees. After You Graduate PhD graduates have received appointments at Harvard Medical School, Cornell University and fellowships at institutions such as the National Institutes of Health, Atotech USA Inc. and Warner Babcock Institute for Green Chemistry. Understanding the working principles of living organisms and soft matter systems from the basic equations ruling the dynamics of atoms and molecules was considered science fiction until a few years ago, and biophysics was almost unanimously considered a battlefield for phenomenologists. Nowadays, applying rigorous physics to biological processes is no longer a dream. What’s more, it is becoming clear that the next few decades will be the golden age for the “theory of life”, which is expected to undergo the same accelerating growth experienced by other physics disciplines in the past century. Young scientists attracted by the opportunity to develop and apply concepts, models and methods to explore the still uncharted territory of quantitative biology can take up this challenge in our PhD programme in Physics and Chemistry of Biological Systems. This PhD programme has a highly interdisciplinary character and offers advanced, research- oriented training in theoretical and computational topics at the interface of Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The faculty includes members from the SISSA Physics and Mathematics areas, the CNR-IOM Democritos centre and ICTP, the International Centre for Theoretical Physics. Students are typically admitted to the PhD programme after taking a written and oral exam, though non-EU applicants may be pre-selected based exclusively on academic qualifications. During the November-April period of the first year, students attend a set of advanced courses, which include: Statistical Mechanics, Numerical Methods in Computational Physics System Biology, Statistics and Probability Introduction to Biochemistry, Computational Biochemistry Advanced Sampling Techniques Molecular Dynamics Statistical Mechanics of Polymers Mechanical Aspects of Cell Biology and Bioinformatics Introduction to Quantum Chemistry Simulations in Molecular Medicine At the end of the courses, each first year student takes on a supervised research project. The choice of research topic and supervisor is arranged with the PhD faculty. The PhD programme is typically completed in about 4 years. The progress of each PhD student is monitored with an official annual assessment (progress report), and the final PhD exam is based on a written dissertation that is defended orally in front of a board of international experts. The students are selected according to a written and oral test. Application deadlines, dates and number of available positions of the entrance examinations are periodically posted on the PhD announcements webpage, where you can also download the application forms. SISSA makes a contribution towards the travel expenses for attending the exam. Enrollment of all the new students at SISSA and the beginning of classes in the Physics and Chemistry of Biological Systems program will take place at the beginning of November. The normal duration of the Ph.D programme is three years. A fourth year may be allowed when suitable justified. The initial part of the PhD programme is based on course work which is considered to be an integral and necessary part of the research training. Application procedure Candidates must apply to be admitted to the standard entrance examination. Admissions are articulated over three steps. First, candidates are evaluated on the basis of their CV (exams records, publications, etc.) and reference letters. Candidates that pass the 7/10 score in this evaluation are next admitted and invited to take the written exam in Trieste (travel financial support is available according to SISSA rules) which, if successfully passed in followed by an oral interview. The written and oral exams take place in two consecutive days and the outcome of the selection procedure is made known shortly after completion of the oral exams (same day). Candidates must send a paper application form that can be downloaded from the official SISSA announcement web page. Candidates who are not citizens of European Union have two possibilities to be admitted to SISSA as a PhD Student: Pass the regular entrance examination in Trieste as explained above. Pass a Spring preselection based on academic and scientific qualifications. Students selected in this way will therefore enter the School without taking the regular entrance examination, but will be expected to pass a qualifying examination within the first year of study. The spring preselection for non-EU applicants is open until 31st March of 2016. The next coming entrance selection will be held the 27th and 28th June of 2016 (deadline for online applications on 15st June 2016).
