Justification and Purpose The PhD Programme in Economics, offered jointly with the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra, aims to endow doctoral students with advanced and thorough scientific education in Economics, enabling them to conduct high-level research and perform academic professional work involving demanding economic analysis. The quality of the PhD programme rests upon a highly educated faculty holding doctoral degrees awarded by outstanding European and American universities and whose research excellence is documented by a large number of publications in excellent international scientific journals. At the University of Minho, faculty members undertake their research activities in the Economic Policies Research Unit (NIPE), which ranked Very Good, the second highest in the country for Economics, in the last evaluation of R&D units by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, and in the Applied Microeconomic Research Unit (NIMA). The Ph.D. students work very closely with the faculty on their proposals and thesis. The completion of the Doctoral Programme accounts for 240 ECTS. Hence, it is a four-year-long/eight-semester-long programme: students are required to perform coursework during the two first years of the programme and in the last two they perform research and write a doctoral thesis. Students are also expected to attend several seminars in various Economics Science related domains throughout the doctoral programme.
