Programme description The international programme on Wood Biology and Technology is a three year study which leads to a Doctoral degree. The intensive, research oriented Ph.D. programme is taught by internationally respected scientists.It is designed for highly qualified students who have studied forestry, wood sciences, biology, biochemistry, microbiology, chemistry etc. To assure a high standard individual training, the number of participants in the programme is limited to 12 students per year.Within the PhD-programme every student mainly works on his or her special research project. He or she becomes part of one of these science groups and is supervised by one of the leading professors. According to the new study regulations each student has two additional tutors (professors) who usually become the co-examiners at the oral exam. PhD-students are entitled to suggest these two persons for this task. One of these persons can be a professor from another university.The students are expected to be able to work and research independently and finally present a major scientific contribution to their field of specialisation. Aside of research work successful applicants have to take part in lessons and practical courses which shall prepare them for leading management positions in the woodworking industry and in research institutes. All compulsory courses are taught in English. The programme is member of the "Georg-August University School of Science" (GAUSS).   Research Topics One major focus of the ongoing research lies on reducing the main technical disadvantages of wood in use: its limited resistance to fungi and insects, its disposition to swell and shrink and its instability to UV-radiation. The research groups in Göttingen are developing different new approaches to overcome these technical disadvantages: acetylation, modification with organic silicon compounds, coatings, heat treatment, enzymatic activation etc. Another field of research are enzymes involved in wood decay, for example lactases and other redox-enzymes that are of potential use for the wood industry. However, all other topics in the scope of wood science and wood technology can also be dealt with. The “PhD Programme in Computer Science” (PCS) is a PhD programme offered by the graduate school of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics: Georg-August University School of Science (GAUSS). PCS was created by the participating institutions of the Center for Computational Sciences and the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen in 2005 with the mission to provide high quality PhD education on a high scientific level within three years. The PCS programme includes lectures, seminars, and methods courses. In addition, PCS encourages to participate in international conferences or workshops. PCS also emphasizes soft skills such as teamwork, problem solving and moderation techniques. Qualifying Examination Within six months of completing your coursework, and before you can begin working on your dissertation, you are required to pass a two-day qualification examination covering content from all completed courses. Students should plan on up to 16 hours to complete the exam over a two-day period. Passing the qualifying examination will require that the student achieves a satisfactory score on each section. Questions on the exam are prepared and subsequently graded by a committee of the program faculty, with the oversight and approval of the Department Chair. The exam will be graded for course subject mastery, which will include organization of the response, clarity of thought, depth of understanding, accuracy of information presented, and quality of writing with an emphasis on demonstration of research knowledge and ability. The student will be admitted to candidacy status upon successful completion of the qualifying exam and all course work, and will be enrolled in DAV 901 in the subsequent semester. The student will be allowed one retake each for the components of the exam should he or she fail to achieve at least a satisfactory score on either component. The student will need to retake only the component failed. Dissertation First and foremost, a Ph.D. is a rigorous research degree. Students will likely spend far more time preparing for and writing their doctoral dissertation than they will in the Embry-Riddle virtual classroom. In order to complete the dissertation, students will choose an original research topic based on an area of interested developed during their course of study. Students are provided opportunities as early as their first residency to explore potential research topics and receive feedback and insight from faculty, industry advisors, and graduates. During the second residency, students will enter the pre-dissertation phase, during which they will prepare and present a prospectus describing the likely area of research for the dissertation. Students will also meet extensively with their advisor to discuss their prospectus. This prospectus will assist program administrators, faculty, and the student to identify a faculty member who has expertise in the student's chosen area of inquiry, and who will ultimately be assigned as the chair of the student's dissertation committee. A minimum of two other members will serve on the committee.
