PhD in Nautical Operations – Joint Degree About the programme The doctoral programme in Nautical Operations is a joint degree between University College of Southeast Norway (HSN) Stord/Haugesund University College (HSH) Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Ålesund (NTNU) Arctic University of Norway (UiT) The doctoral programme trains qualified candidates for research, teaching, dissemination and innovation work, and other activities where there is a requirement for scientific insight and an operational maritime focus. Implementation of complex nautical operations today requires interdisciplinary and varied expertise, including research expertise, for safe and efficient planning, implementation and evaluation of nautical operations. Academic content Nautical operations is comprised of two disciplines: Nautical, which covers the navigation, manoeuvring and transport of floating vessels, and operations, which indicates that the PhD programme will focus on applied research to support, improve and develop the activities that are being implemented. The operational perspective includes both strategic, tactical and operational aspects. Strategic levels including choosing the type and size of a fleet of vessels. Tactical aspects concerning the design of individual ships, choice of equipment and personnel. The operational aspects include the planning, implementation and evaluation of nautical operations. It will be a common subject that is offered at all four institutions. Further academic content will be linked to individual focus areas at the four institutions: Maritime Organizational Safety Management and Fire Safety and Evacuation Research at HSH Maritime Operations and Sensor Technology at UiT Maritime Human Factors together with Maritime Logistics and port operations at HSN Maritime Design and Product Development at NTNU The PhD programme consists of: The academic training component (30 credits). This is made up of topics at PhD level divided into compulsory (15 credits) and elective (15 credits) components. The core areas of the academic training have two compulsory and eight elective topics based on the programme's overall profile. The core areas ensure the continuation of the central themes in the maritime-related undergraduate and graduate programmes at the four institutions. The research component thesis is an independent research or research and development project, that must meet international standards with regard to ethical requirements, academic standards and methodology within the field of nautical operations. The thesis should contribute to the development of new specialist knowledge and be at a level that suggests it could be published internationally or issued in an appropriate format, as part of the field's research-based knowledge development. What kind of job can you get? Candidates will be qualified for positions within the national and international maritime sector. PhD in Applied Micro and Nanosystems Micro- and nanotechnology has become a very broad field, spanning everything from physics to materials science, chemistry and electronics, and more. The PhD program in Applied Micro- and Nanosystems educates scientists with broad knowledge in micro- and nano system technologies. This becomes an increasingly important part of our everyday life, in all sorts of "smart systems", as for example sensors integrated into mobile phones, equipment for medical diagnosis, for monitoring the environment and for instrumentation in industrial processes. Academically it builds on a broad range of engineering and science: Electronics, product design / engineering, material-learning, computer science and chemical processing, and basic physics. The research training ranging from design and mathematical modeling with advanced software tools, the manufacturing and characterization of national leader clean room laboratories. The laboratory at USN, along with complementary laboratories in Oslo and Trondheim, constitutes "NorFab" which is the Research Council's investment in infrastructure. The program is closely linked to industry cluster which exist regionally and nationally. This tight connection to the industry is unique among Norwegian PhD programs. The program is part of the reseach school "Nano Network" with national labor, where USN's role is to focusing on integrated, complete systems with direct industrial relevance. Internationally, the academic environment is closely linked to leading research centers in Europe, North America and East Asia. The PhD program's core areas are: Ultrasound for medical, maritime and industrial use. Tasks in design and fabrication/integration of ultrasound transducer, such as for imaging of internal organs or for surveying the seabed. Miniaturised energy sources, eg. energy harvesting from the environment to supply power to inaccessible systems (such as instrumentation on windmill blades or inside the tires). Biomedical components: For faster diagnosis, and implantable sensors for monitoring patient health. High-frequency components: Next-generation radio-, communications- and radar systems. Micro-optics: Thin polymer films for laser projectors and microlenses. Measuring systems for demanding environments: high operating temperatures (as in oil wells, aircraft engines or thermoelectric generators), low operating temperatures (as precision measurements at liquid-nitrogen temperatures), mechanical shock etc. sets requirements for fabrication methods that require solutions different from traditional technology.
