ENGINEERING GEOLOGY Engineering geology applies the geological knowledge in design and construction in all branches of civil engineering, in mining and in urban planning. It is an interdisciplinary field in between the science and technology. Using technical or rather mathematical methods, the knowledge gained by geology is applied in analyzing geodynamic processes and the interaction between the rock and civil engineering structures. HYDROGEOLOGY Hydrogeology is a scientific field engaged in groundwaters, their origin, conditions of incidence, laws of movement, their regimes, physical and chemical properties, their interaction with rocks, surface water and atmosphere. Hydrogeology ranges among applied geological branches and has closest relation to engineering geology. Modern hydrogeology has the character of a cross-border scientific discipline at the margin between geology, hydraulics, hydrology, chemistry and several technological disciplines (water management, civil engineering, chemical technology of water treatment etc.).A necessary method of modern hydrogeology is the development and use of mathematical models simulating natural processes as well as artificial interventions in the regime of waters both in saturated and unsaturated zones. The contents of the hydrogeology of today is moving from simple searching for water resources to the determination of optimum conditions of their utilization and protection. Hydrogeology plays an irreplacable role in the field of the protection of the living environment, in research and remediation of contaminated soils, rocks and groundwater. APPLIED GEOPHYSICS Applied geophysics studies physical fields and their utilization in solving geological problems. The main interest is in the upper part of the Earth s crust in the depth range of the first meters to first kilometers. The basic methods of applied geophysics are: gravity methods, magnetic methods, seismic methods, geoelectrical methods, radioactivity methods, geothermal methods and well logging. Geophysical methods are applied for investigation and exploration of mineral deposits, building materials, water resources, energy resources and are significant in monitoring and protection of natural environment. Description of the entrance examination and evaluation criteria The admissions test consists of a personal interview. In exceptional cases, the dean may permit a virtual interview via communications technology. The maximum score is 100 points. During the admissions interview, the applicant must demonstrate language skills to study in the chosen field, and the necessary skills to conduct independent scientific work. The applicant will be asked to elaborate on his/her interest in the particular topic, choice of supervisor, and ability to carry out research in this area. Conditions for admission The doctoral program application must be properly completed and submitted by April 30th, 2016, including all appendices. The applicant must pass an admissions examination by receiving a minimum of at least 50 points during the admissions interview. The applicant must have successfully completed a master’s studies program, verified by the submission of a notarized copy of the diploma or other documentation of master’s degree by September 30th, 2016. The requirement for submitting a notarized copy does not apply to graduates of master’s programs at the CU Faculty of Science. Applicants who have received their master’s degree at a foreign university must submit a certificate of equivalence for this foreign university degree by September 30th, 2016 to the CU FS Department of Studies, unless determined otherwise by international agreement. Study in the Doctoral Study Programme Doctoral study at CTU in Prague is pursuant to act No.111/1998 Coll., in accordance with Study and Examination Code for Students of the Czech Technical University in Prague, Rules of Doctoral Study at the CTU in Prague, Admission Procedures and Conditions of Study for Foreigners and the guidelines of individual faculties and institutes. A doctoral study programme at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering is divided into 16 branches of study. To be eligible for admission to doctoral study, applicants must hold a master degree (not a bachelor degree) in the same discipline or a related field. Admission to the programme is at the discretion of the Dean of the Faculty on the basis of the results of the selection procedure. Experience in the chosen field is not a condition of admission, and there are no age restrictions. Students in their final year of studies may also apply, their admission is conditional on graduation. Citizens of the Czech Republic, foreigners and persons without nationality, who are legally resident in the Czech Republic, may study in the doctoral programme. Applicants who are admitted to doctoral study become doctoral students of the FEE. The goal of doctoral study is to prepare graduates for scientific work. By attaining higher qualifications, including knowledge of foreign languages, Ph.D. graduates will significantly increase their career opportunities. A Ph.D. programme at the FEE is carried out through full-time and combined (part-time) forms of study. Full-time study at the FEE CTU generally takes 3 years for students enrolled before 1. 3. 2007 and 4 years for students enrolled after 1.3.2007, while combined form of study generally takes 5 years, with the option of interrupting the studies. Transfer between combined study and full-time study, or vice-versa, is possible on the basis of a recommendation by the Supervisor and a written statement from the doctoral student to the Dean of the Faculty. The Supervisor is appointed by the Dean. Supervisors are professors, associate professors (docents), or distinguished scholars. It is possible, with the agreement of the Supervisor and the appropriate Branch Board, to complete the study programme in a shorter time. Doctoral students studying at CTU are, for the duration of their studies, classified as regular tertiary students, with all associated rights and responsibilities. In both full-time and combined forms of study, doctoral students must submit their doctoral thesis within 7 years of the commencement of their studies. The studies take place according to an individual study plan, which designates the time allocated to study, specialised and scientific activities with plans for the development of the doctoral thesis, study at other workplaces (which may be outside the Czech Republic), designated minimum teaching duties, dates of examinations for courses taken, and other responsibilities. The individual study plan is specified by the Supervisor, after the doctoral student has expressed his/her agreement with it. Fulfilment of the coursework component (a study block) of the individual plan is completed by passing the prescribed examinations and by presenting and defending a specialised study (written report) on the current state of the subject in the world. It also comprises presentation of student's research work to scientific community. After successful termination of the study block, having passed the exam in English, it is possible to apply for the final comprehensive doctoral examination, in which the student should demonstrate his/her specialised theoretical knowledge, methods of scientific work, and the ability to acquire new scientific knowledge and to apply it creatively. This examination is conducted by the Board of Examiners for Comprehensive Doctoral Examination (Komise pro státní doktorskou zkouąku). Successful completion of this examination is a pre-requisite for the presentation and defence of the doctoral thesis. This thesis is a result of the solution of a specific scientific task; it proves the capability of a doctoral student to independently create his/her own work and must include original achievements of scientific work published by the author of the dissertation or results accepted for publication. The doctoral thesis must contain original new findings. The presentation and defence of the work is conducted by the Board for the Defence of a Doctoral Thesis (Komise pro obhajobu dizertační práce), and is open to the public. A single re-submission is allowed in the case of an unsuccessful final examination or an unsuccessful presentation and defence of the doctoral thesis. Based on the regular completion of study in a Ph.D. Programme, degree of "Doctor" (abbreviated to "Ph.D.") is obtained from The Czech Technical University in Prague. Doctoral studies can be prematurely ended by the student, on the basis of a written application.
