FdV Life Science PhD Program

Doctorate Studies in Forestry in Europe 2017. Since the creation of the FdV doctoral school in 2006, the aims were focused on life sciences. Traditionally, students have pursued interdisciplinary research projects in natural sciences, engineering and technology, medical and health sciences. Recently, projects in the life sciences have incorporated approaches and/or applications from other disciplines including the social sciences and humanities, however the focus of the work is on advancement of knowledge in life science. As of December 2015, over 110 PhDs have been granted to FdV fellows studying topics at the frontiers of life science, and over 120 are currently in pursuit of their degree. “Frontières du Vivant” (FdV) projects involve interactions between a broad range of academic disciplines, in the pursuit of understanding living systems. Students who join the doctoral school are trained in various disciplines (e.g. biology, physics, medicine, economy, linguistics) from around the world. Degree requirements The PhD at the FdV program represents a combination of research experience gained in the hosting lab and experience in interdisciplinary science-related activities gained through the doctoral school. Students are required to complete the FdV training program, which consists of at least 300 hours of training. Half of the hours must be completed through FdV approved courses, workshops, or activities and the remainder may be completed through external programs, international conferences, summer schools, etc. The doctoral school does not require a determined number of publications to authorize the defense. However, it recommends that students are involved in 3 publications during their thesis: One research article written with the lab, not necessarily as lead author, and not necessarily on the student’s main subject. One review type article, taking advantage of the work of interdisciplinary synthesis expected by the school. One research article as lead author on the student’s main subject. Approval to defend the thesis is granted by the doctoral school director. The director will consider the following: the Thesis Advisory Committee recommendations, research achievements, publications or dissemination of the work in thesis, and completion of the doctoral school training program including courses, conferences, and involvement in the FdV doctoral program. Programme description The international programme on Wood Biology and Technology is a three year study which leads to a Doctoral degree. The intensive, research oriented Ph.D. programme is taught by internationally respected scientists.It is designed for highly qualified students who have studied forestry, wood sciences, biology, biochemistry, microbiology, chemistry etc. To assure a high standard individual training, the number of participants in the programme is limited to 12 students per year.Within the PhD-programme every student mainly works on his or her special research project. He or she becomes part of one of these science groups and is supervised by one of the leading professors. According to the new study regulations each student has two additional tutors (professors) who usually become the co-examiners at the oral exam. PhD-students are entitled to suggest these two persons for this task. One of these persons can be a professor from another university.The students are expected to be able to work and research independently and finally present a major scientific contribution to their field of specialisation. Aside of research work successful applicants have to take part in lessons and practical courses which shall prepare them for leading management positions in the woodworking industry and in research institutes. All compulsory courses are taught in English. The programme is member of the "Georg-August University School of Science" (GAUSS).   Research Topics One major focus of the ongoing research lies on reducing the main technical disadvantages of wood in use: its limited resistance to fungi and insects, its disposition to swell and shrink and its instability to UV-radiation. The research groups in Göttingen are developing different new approaches to overcome these technical disadvantages: acetylation, modification with organic silicon compounds, coatings, heat treatment, enzymatic activation etc. Another field of research are enzymes involved in wood decay, for example lactases and other redox-enzymes that are of potential use for the wood industry. However, all other topics in the scope of wood science and wood technology can also be dealt with.
