Informatics

The PhD is a doctoral degree, specifically called a "doctor of philosophy" degree. This is misleading because PhD holders are not necessarily philosophers (unless they earned their degree in philosophy!). That said, PhD recipients are able to engage in thought experiments, reason about problems, and solve problems in sophisticated ways.

This is an advanced study that enables you to have a better understanding of the informatics area of specialization. With this study, you can give a scholarly contribution to this area of study by bringing real solutions to people using the technology.

PDEng in Clinical Informatics (CI)

Doctorate Studies in Informatics in Europe 2017. PDEng in Clinical Informatics (CI) TU/e offers two-year (post-Master's) designer's programs. Like a doctoral candidate, you will have the status of TU/e employee if you are selected for one of these programs. The programs start with a year of advanced education, followed by a major design project of eight to twelve months in a company. The designer's programs lead to a Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng degree). These programs are given under the banner of 3TU.School for Technological Design, Stan Ackermans Institute, a joint initiative of the three universities of technology in the Netherlands. The program is also part of the School of Medical Physics and Engineering Eindhoven (SMPE/e; www..smpee.nl). In this school is geared to the education of young (technolical) professionals in the healthcare arena. Clinical Informatics (CI) The Clinical Informatics programme is geared towards the design of information systems in healthcare. The CI trainees develop an in-depth understanding of the technical aspects and the user requirements within the healthcare domain. IT knowledge, but also knowledge of clinical, as well as business processes is crucial to the design of optimal solutions, which really support the professionals in healthcare. The programme is carried out in close cooperation with hospitals and other care institutions all over the Netherlands. All trainees in the programme are required to be fluent in Dutch. CCTO Certification This program is recognized as a PDEng program by the CCTO, the Dutch certification institute for technological designer programs. Admission and application Application is open to university graduates from the Netherlands and other countries. You will at least need a Master of Science degree or equivalent, preferably in the exact sciences. There will be an assessment and selection procedure before you can enter the PDEng program. The PDEng programs use strict selection criteria to ensure the required high quality. Excellent marks, motivation and a design-oriented attitude are vitally important. You should also have an excellent command of the English language. Selection You can apply by sending your letter of application with a complete curriculum vitae and at least two letters of recommendation (in English). Suitable candidates will be invited for an interview with the selection committee of the relevant PDEng program. Each PDEng program has different starting dates, as well as its own specific admission requirements and selection procedure. Admission If you are selected for a PDEng program, you are appointed as a trainee for the duration of the program, up to two years. The first semester features four courses chosen in the areas foundations of computing, programming paradigms and information technologies and a seminar on research methodologies which includes working visits to MAP associated research centers and laboratories. In the second semester, the students are offered a number of optional courses taught by professors from MAP universities and leading scientists from abroad. The first semester features four courses chosen in the areas foundations of computing, programming paradigms and information technologies and a seminar on research methodologies which includes working visits to MAP associated research centers and laboratories. In the second semester, the students are offered a number of optional courses taught by professors from MAP universities and leading scientists from abroad. The graduate students are expected to take some credits in matters not directly related to their field of study. In the first year, the student must choose his topic of dissertation from a list of possible research projects. Based on this choice, the student must prepare his thesis proposal, during the second semester, which includes an extensive review of the state of the art, a set of detailed objectives and methods, outline of potential contributions and a road map to achieve them. The thesis proposal is discussed with a jury in the end of the first year. Following this curricular year, which is worth 60 credits in the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), the graduate student enters the research and thesis development phase, which lasts for 2 to 3 years and corresponds to at least 120 credits. Students may choose to follow the program as full-time students or, if they are working in a company or in a research project, may prefer to enroll as part-time students in 30 credits per year, paying 60% of the fees. In terms of organization, the MAP universities agreed upon a general model, in which the curricular part is taught entirely in one of the institutions, rotating every year between Minho, Aveiro and Porto. Each student receives individual guidance by a mentor, until he gets a supervisor. After the first year, the student moves to the university and research group of the supervisor. Beyond the regular thesis supervision, the student's progress will be monitored by a PhD committee consisting of two other recognized experts in the field, one of which from an outside institution. Submission of the thesis and thesis defense follow standard international practice. A student will be awarded a doctorate, in the form of a joint PhD degree by the Universities of Minho, Aveiro and Porto, if his thesis is judged to represent an original contribution to knowledge in the chosen area. Study in the Doctoral Study Programme Doctoral study at CTU in Prague is pursuant to act No.111/1998 Coll., in accordance with Study and Examination Code for Students of the Czech Technical University in Prague, Rules of Doctoral Study at the CTU in Prague, Admission Procedures and Conditions of Study for Foreigners and the guidelines of individual faculties and institutes. A doctoral study programme at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering is divided into 16 branches of study. To be eligible for admission to doctoral study, applicants must hold a master degree (not a bachelor degree) in the same discipline or a related field. Admission to the programme is at the discretion of the Dean of the Faculty on the basis of the results of the selection procedure. Experience in the chosen field is not a condition of admission, and there are no age restrictions. Students in their final year of studies may also apply, their admission is conditional on graduation. Citizens of the Czech Republic, foreigners and persons without nationality, who are legally resident in the Czech Republic, may study in the doctoral programme. Applicants who are admitted to doctoral study become doctoral students of the FEE. The goal of doctoral study is to prepare graduates for scientific work. By attaining higher qualifications, including knowledge of foreign languages, Ph.D. graduates will significantly increase their career opportunities. A Ph.D. programme at the FEE is carried out through full-time and combined (part-time) forms of study. Full-time study at the FEE CTU generally takes 3 years for students enrolled before 1. 3. 2007 and 4 years for students enrolled after 1.3.2007, while combined form of study generally takes 5 years, with the option of interrupting the studies. Transfer between combined study and full-time study, or vice-versa, is possible on the basis of a recommendation by the Supervisor and a written statement from the doctoral student to the Dean of the Faculty. The Supervisor is appointed by the Dean. Supervisors are professors, associate professors (docents), or distinguished scholars. It is possible, with the agreement of the Supervisor and the appropriate Branch Board, to complete the study programme in a shorter time. Doctoral students studying at CTU are, for the duration of their studies, classified as regular tertiary students, with all associated rights and responsibilities. In both full-time and combined forms of study, doctoral students must submit their doctoral thesis within 7 years of the commencement of their studies. The studies take place according to an individual study plan, which designates the time allocated to study, specialised and scientific activities with plans for the development of the doctoral thesis, study at other workplaces (which may be outside the Czech Republic), designated minimum teaching duties, dates of examinations for courses taken, and other responsibilities. The individual study plan is specified by the Supervisor, after the doctoral student has expressed his/her agreement with it. Fulfilment of the coursework component (a study block) of the individual plan is completed by passing the prescribed examinations and by presenting and defending a specialised study (written report) on the current state of the subject in the world. It also comprises presentation of student's research work to scientific community. After successful termination of the study block, having passed the exam in English, it is possible to apply for the final comprehensive doctoral examination, in which the student should demonstrate his/her specialised theoretical knowledge, methods of scientific work, and the ability to acquire new scientific knowledge and to apply it creatively. This examination is conducted by the Board of Examiners for Comprehensive Doctoral Examination (Komise pro státní doktorskou zkouąku). Successful completion of this examination is a pre-requisite for the presentation and defence of the doctoral thesis. This thesis is a result of the solution of a specific scientific task; it proves the capability of a doctoral student to independently create his/her own work and must include original achievements of scientific work published by the author of the dissertation or results accepted for publication. The doctoral thesis must contain original new findings. The presentation and defence of the work is conducted by the Board for the Defence of a Doctoral Thesis (Komise pro obhajobu dizertační práce), and is open to the public. A single re-submission is allowed in the case of an unsuccessful final examination or an unsuccessful presentation and defence of the doctoral thesis. Based on the regular completion of study in a Ph.D. Programme, degree of "Doctor" (abbreviated to "Ph.D.") is obtained from The Czech Technical University in Prague. Doctoral studies can be prematurely ended by the student, on the basis of a written application. In the case of long-term neglect of responsibilities, the studies can be ended by a decision of the Dean or the Director of the institute. [-]
