The program is based not only on the analysis of relevant theoretical models but also on solving practical cases. The program, which addresses the demand for highly qualified professionals, ensures that doctoral candidates reach an appreciable level of academic and research autonomy along with an adequate capacity for criticism and analysis. Through research, academic activities and participation in seminars and courses, students will work on obtaining a solid academic grounding common to all areas of specialization. Therefore, PhD students must be able to investigate and analyze in depth, in an interdisciplinary manner, the theoretical and empirical research topics covered by the program. Students will spend 6/9 months abroad in a foreign university or scientific institute where they will be able to earn the required credits. Admission requirements The admission process is designed to establish the candidate’s knowledge, his/her aptitude for scientific research, and whether the PhD program’s research topics are suitable for the candidate. Admission is based on: An evaluation of the candidate’s academic qualifications and other relevant factors in the curriculum vitae; An evaluation of the publications submitted; An evaluation of the research project submitted, also with regard to the curricula covered by the PhD program; Once the curriculum vitae and research project have received a positive evaluation, candidates will take a written exam in accordance with the criteria specified in the call for applications. In the written exam, candidates can choose from six topics, irrespective of their research project. Specifically, two groups of subjects are identified for each curriculum. For each group of subjects, one topic is selected from the three topics suggested by the Commission, among specific themes. Non-Italian citizens and Italian citizens that reside abroad can write the exam in English. However, during the oral exam they will have to prove that they have an adequate knowledge of Italian; An oral exam relating to the research project submitted and related topics and issues. Candidates must also demonstrate a good command of English. Guidelines on the written exam In the written exam, candidates are asked to write an essay on one topic that they can choose among six drawn topics, irrespective of the scientific field of their research project. More specifically: For each of the three PhD curricula two Fields, as indicated below, are identified. This means that overall, there are six Fields; For each Field, one topic is drawn from the three different topics suggested by the Commission among the specific themes identified for each Field (see the list for each field). Candidates will not be summoned to take the written exam until at least 20 days after the date of publication of those admitted to the exam in question. The PhD program in Politics: History, Theory, Science, totally taught in English, is aimed at giving participants the skills needed to embark on an academic or professional career in international institutions, NGOs, public and private research institutes, and political and institutional communications. The goal of the PhD program is to supply the tools needed to enter the current debate in philosophy and political theory, political, science and political history and to provide a forum in which this debate can continue and evolve in an advanced academic and internationally relevant context. The program, in collaboration with the Center for Ethics and Global Politics (CEGP), since 2004, is aimed to offer an interdisciplinary perspective on contemporary global political studies. The entire length of the program is three years. The coursework part is held in the first academic year. The first two years of the program are dedicated to coursework, whereas the third and fourth years are dedicated to research and dissertation. Economics Ph.D. is a four year program, totally taught in English, aimed at training international economists capable of contributing to the advancement of knowledge and expanding the frontiers of research in the economic disciplines. These economists are prepared for academic or professional careers in international institutions, central banks and with economic and/or regulatory policy makers, or in consulting firms and financial institutions. The program is designed to give students the ability to understand and elaborate a broad spectrum of economic problems and to provide up to date analytical, empirical and quantitative techniques. Students acquire the necessary skills to undertake both academic and professional careers, in universities, international research institutions, public authorities, central banks, consulting and financial institutions. During the program students focus on writing their doctoral dissertation and present their work in internal seminars, while following seminars or “reading groups” at LUISS or at EIEF (Einaudi Institute for Economics and Finance). The Ph.D. dissertation is expected to consist in an original and significant contribution to the chosen field of specialization.
