The PhD programme "Molecular Sciences and Biotechnology in Crop Production“ forms part of the "Georg-August University School of Science (GAUSS)” graduate school. Students are given the opportunity to conduct an independent research project in their specialist area. In addition, the programme encompasses lectures, seminars, method courses and language and professional skills courses. Based on this spectrum of courses, students can compile their own individual course of studies. Support in the selection of courses and the related administration is provided by the programme coordinator. The programme takes a period of three years to complete. The PhD dissertation can be submitted in English or in German either in the traditional form of a dissertation or as a cumulative collection of several publications. Following the successful defence of the dissertation (viva), the academic title of Ph.D or Dr. rer.nat will be awarded. All courses and seminars are conducted in English. It is offered by the Göttingen Center for Molecular Biosciences (GZMB) at the University of Göttingen, and is conducted jointly by the participating university departments and research groups, the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry, the Max Planck Institute for Experimental Medicine, and the German Primate Center (DPZ). The intensive, research-oriented education qualifies the students for professional work in the fields of molecular and cellular biosciences. The Molecular Biology Program is also recognized and funded as an International Max Planck Research School. The program is open to students from Germany and from abroad, who hold a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent degree) in the biosciences, chemistry, medicine, or related fields. All courses are held in English. Scholarships are available. The academic year starts in mid-October, preceded by three weeks of orientation. Applications are welcome until January 15th of the year of enrollment. Admission is only possible to the first segment of the program, not directly to the PhD program. Applicants interested only in a PhD project should consider applying to one of the Göttingen PhD programs in related disciplines (see participating institutions). The first segment of the program comprises lectures, tutorials, seminars, methods courses, and independent research projects (laboratory rotations). As teaching in the first year follows an intensive schedule without semester breaks, it is possible to accumulate 90 credits (ECTS) in the first segment, allowing for admission to the Master's examinations at the end of the first year. Subsequently, two separate segments are offered: PhD Program: Good to excellent results after the first year qualify for direct admission to a three-year doctoral project in one of the participating research groups. The Master’s thesis requirement is waived. After the successful defense of a doctoral thesis, the degree Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) or the equivalent title Doctor rerum naturalium (Dr. rer. nat.) is conferred. MSc Program: Alternatively, students may conclude the program with a Master’s thesis, based on six months of experimental, scientific research. The degree Master of Science (MSc) is awarded upon successful completion of the Master’s thesis. Special emphasis is placed on an all-round advisory service in both academic and extracurricular activities. For this service concept, the Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs awarded the program with the 2004 prize for excellent support services for foreign students at German universities. In October 2006, the Molecular Biology Master's program was awarded the label "Top 10 International Master's Degree Courses made in Germany". The award was granted by "Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft" together with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in a national contest, in which 121 Master's programs of 77 universities participated. Criteria for the award were the innovative concept, a high degree of internationalization, scientific excellence of teaching, measures of quality assurance, services and counseling, and the alumni record. Brief Description

The focus of this study programme is on the foundations and the evolution of nonhuman and human primate behavior. Research projects are undertaken in the fields of psychology, anthropology and evolutionary biology, with an emphasis on comparative approaches. Core areas are the evolution of social behavior, group behavior and group coordination, developmental psychology, as well as the cognitive and physiological foundations of behavior. The programme is run by the Faculty of Biology and Psychology of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, the Courant Research Centres „Evolution of Social Behaviour” and „Text structures" and the German Primate Center. Interdisciplinary collaboration and exchange are an important element of this study program.Doctoral students are affiliated with one (or sometimes two) of the research groups of this programme. Each project is supervised by a three-member thesis committee. The exchange across groups and disciplines is fostered by the integration of the doctoral students into the Courant Research Centres „Evolution of Social Behaviour” and „Text structures" funded by the German Initiative of Excellence. Its regular research colloquium provides a platform for progress reports and discussions. Participation in scientific meetings and workshops is encouraged. In addition to the core research, a moderate amount of course work and teaching is required (total number of credits: 20).
