PhD Language Recommendation Ph.D. students may be required to demonstrate proficiency in one foreign language if it is deemed essential for the student’s dissertation research. Language proficiency may be demonstrated by having passed two years of course work in the study of a language, or by achieving a satisfactory score on the ETS. PhD Comprehensive Examinations The standard format consists of an annotated bibliography along with a discussion paper that forms the basis for a dialogue between the student and the supervisor. At least one of the exams must be taken with a PCC faculty member. Ideally, all other coursework must be completed (though it is possible to do one of the examinations concurrently with a last course). Each comprehensive exam must be completed in one semester. See the PCC Program Handbook for more details. The PCC general comprehensive exam consists of a 20-to-25-page essay drawing from the PCC recommended reading list and other relevant sources, situated in the context of the first and/or second of the PCC PhD learning goals. With the recommendation of the student's PCC faculty mentor and the PCC chair, a student may opt for an oral comprehensive exam as an alternative to the written exam. The second/specialized comprehensive exam prepares the student for the framing of the dissertation proposal by reviewing the literature of the student's field of interest. The exam consists of a reading list and a 20-to-25-page essay, to be followed up by a discussion with faculty. PhD Dissertation The PCC faculty direct dissertations in two broad specializations: Integral Ecology and Cosmology, and Archetypal and Consciousness Studies. After successfully completing both comprehensive exams, the student may begin working on the dissertation proposal. The dissertation proposal must be finished in three semesters; a student may petition his or her mentor in writing for an extra semester, but it should not be assumed that such an extension would be granted. If an extension is granted, the student will elect one semester of the supervised Proposal Completion Seminar (PARP 6900). Once the proposal is completed and approved by a three-person committee, the student may begin writing the dissertation proper. Throughout the dissertation writing process, the student registers for 0 (zero) units/flat fee. PhD Admissions Requirements Admission to the Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness PhD program is increasingly selective. It is independent of admission to the MA program and requires a separate admissions application. An applicant for the PhD must have done outstanding work at the MA level (see “MA Program Goals,” above). In addition, the PhD applicant must (1) identify at least one PCC core faculty member who would be appropriate to serve as a mentor in the PhD program and a second faculty member who would be able and willing to serve on the dissertation committee; (2) show close familiarity with that faculty member’s particular area of expertise; and (3) demonstrate the necessary preparation and motivation for specializing in that area (or areas), especially with respect to research leading to the dissertation. The materials required for application are an autobiography, a two-to-four-page statement of goals, a writing sample, two letters of recommendation, and transcripts. Those admitted into the doctoral concentration who do not have an MA from CIIS in Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness may be required to complete up to an additional 18 units of coursework (minus equivalencies) from the core section of the MA curriculum. The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Northern Arizona University (NAU) will launch a new PhD program in Astronomy and Planetary Science in the Fall of 2016. The Department is now recruiting new faculty members and PhD students. Current and Future Faculty Expertise Current faculty members use ground-based and space-based telescopes to study small bodies in the Solar System and the formation and evolution of other planetary systems; spacecraft imagery to study planetary surfaces; and a state-of-the-art laboratory to study astrophysical ice analogs. NAU faculty members have close research collaborations with scientists at local institutions including Lowell Observatory, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Astrogeology Science Center, and the United States Naval Observatory. In the next few years, the Department will hire tenure-track faculty members with expertise in exoplanet science, astro-chemistry, astro-informatics, astronomical instrumentation, and observational astronomy specializing in Solar System objects, exoplanets, or related topics. Superb Access To Large Telescopes Faculty members and their PhD students have full competitive access to facilities run by the University of Arizona including the 2 x 8.4-meter Large Binocular Telescope, 6.5-meter Magellan Telescopes, 6.5-meter MMT telescope, 2.3-meter Bok telescope 1.8-meter Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope, and the 1.5-meter Kuiper Telescope. NAU researches have access to the 4.3-meter Discovery Channel Telescope, 1.8 Perkins telescope, and 0.8-meter NURO telescope through partnerships with Lowell Observatory. Faculty and students also have access to the 0.5-meter Lutz telescope on the NAU campus. Curriculum PhD students in the program will build skills and knowledge through formal class work and an original research project. Students will take ten core classes during their first two years in the program. Five of the core classes will focus on the development of essential skills PhD astronomers and planetary scientists need upon entering the workforce in an academic or industrial setting (instrument design and fabrication, optical design, computational physics, big data, and techniques of observational astronomy). Five classes will focus on advanced topics in astronomy and planetary science that students need for a solid foundation upon which to build their own postdoctoral research (formation and evolution of solar systems, atmospheres, interiors, and surfaces of planetary bodies, astro-chemistry, exoplanet science, and special topics). Students will perform their own original research, write a dissertation, and make an oral, public presentation of their results. In the original research component, students will learn how to collect and analyze data, write up their results, and communicate their results to others in a manner consistent with professional standards in the astronomical and planetary science communities. Financial Support All students in the program will receive full-tuition waivers, a stipend as either a graduate teaching assistant or a graduate research assistant, and health insurance. Generally, students will be supported as teaching assistants in introductory physics and/or astronomy labs during their first two years as then as research assistants after advancing to PhD candidacy. However, they should be aware of the primary fields of interests of the members of the Department of Logic, i.e. nonclassical logics, set theory, metamathematics, and interactions between these fields, including the historical aspects. It is possible to encounter biomechanic applications in a wide range of sciences and professional activities. Biomechanics in this form can be used not only in the area of basic research, but also in a wide range of professional activities such as rehabilitation medicine, ergonomics, forensic and biomedicine engineering, sports, etc. The training centre of the Charles University and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic provides interdisciplinary education in the PhD degree study programmes in a broad scope, and within particular specializations.
