Coursework submitted for advanced standing transfer credit must be approved by the Dean. The coursework must be relevant to the students’ academic and/or professional goals and be consistent with the degree that is to be earned. Professional experience is required of all of our students, although IUGS grants no credit for “life experience.” Degrees Offered IUGS offers a PhD, Doctor of Organisational and Political Psychology, and Master of Science degrees. Students may choose to declare and pursue a specialty in either Organisational Psychology or Political Psychology. Students are eligible for conferral of the PhD with the completion of a research-based dissertation, using an action learning framework. Students are eligible for conferral of the Doctor of Organisational and Political Psychology degree with the completion of a Doctoral Project showing the application of their learning to an applied area of interest. The Faculty of Behavioural Health provides accredited, recognized and affordable doctoral degrees and master's degrees for behavioural health professionals who desire to expand their personal and professional development. Our programmes offer candidates the opportunity to enhance their educational pursuits on a part or full-time basis by: - Exploring current trends, philosophies, practices and methodologies; - Promoting interaction with other mental health professionals and educators; - Affording candidates the opportunity to formally focus on their specific area(s) of interest. Candidates who have successfully completed our doctoral programme enjoy the recognition, as well as the acquired knowledge needed to meet their professional goals and better serve their clients, organisations and communities. PSYCHOALANYSIS Since 1979 International University for Graduate Studies (IUGS) has been conferring doctorates in psychoanalysis. The results have been career enhancement, personal satisfaction and increased professional abilities for the recipients of the doctoral degrees. The doctoral programmes, the PhD and the D.Psychoan, are offered to candidates who have an appropriate professional background. The Psychoanalysis Programme has been established for professionals who use psychoanalysis as an important therapeutic approach. Graduates have contributed by teaching, research and publishing as well as in their therapeutic practices, including university teaching and involvement with International Psychoanalytic Institutes including the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis. IUGS accepts courses from approved Psychoanalytic Institutes. Students who graduate from an approved accredited graduate Institute will have met the requirements for the sixty-six (66) course credits in transfer. Students may enter the Doctoral Programme before completing their psychoanalytic coursework. Each IUGS programme is dedicated to maintaining a standard of excellence while understanding the needs of adult learners who are busy professionals. Candidates interact with faculty, staff and other students in a rich, supportive learning community. Degree candidates study with scholars and professionals from other universities, non-profit organisations, public agencies, local government, international organisations, school systems, private clinical practices, and health care delivery systems. Studies are tailored to the specific learning needs of each individual. Additionally, many degree candidates are experienced clinicians with successful psychotherapy practices. This doctorate is relevant for psychoanalysis professionals whose career paths have led them to important roles in Institute involvement, higher education, and thriving psychotherapy practices. Instructional Philosophy and Mission The primary mission of the educational programme in Behavioural Health coursework is to; To develop competent, critical reviewers and well-informed researchers, professors and clinicians, To enhance and promote a comprehensive basis for teaching, researching and practicing behavioural health, To promote systems which respect the diversity of client populations as well as approaches to research, teaching and clinical practice, To advance the body of academic literature within the field through the promotion of research outcomes and analysis, research and clinical ethics. teaching and clinical effectiveness, special populations, evidence-based practice, and mental health concerns, To inculcate excellence and critical thinking within the field. Outcomes Students must demonstrate the following; Comprehensive knowledge of behavioural health, clinical theory and practice via literature review, bibliography, and the development of an annotated outline for the Dissertation or Project, Thorough knowledge of research methodologies via formulation of a behavioural health research question and the selection of an appropriate means of data collection and analysis, Well-developed critical thinking skills, including those of analysis and synthesis, including approaches in awareness and advantages of qualitative and quantitative research methods, Graduate level written and oral communication skills, Competent psychotherapy practice and research skills with individuals, children, adolescents, families, couples, the elderly and also group psychotherapy, Competent practice and research skills concerning mental health issues with an additional awareness of the following: Co-morbidities with physical illness; Cross-theoretical approaches to mental health treatment and research; Awareness of ability/willingness to change in psychotherapy and; Approaches to collaboration with other health care professional and mental health workers. Ease with discourse about subject matter via Dissertation Defence or Oral Examination and when appropriate at round table discussions with peers and faculty, A minimum of 85% mastery of examination materials and ability to participate in analysis of research articles and ability to translate these articles into components of clinical practice. Content IUGS offers the following Degrees in Behavioural Health: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD); Doctor of Psychology (PsyD). The student’s portfolio and transcripts are examined by the Dean after discussion with the student to determine his or her goals. The 66 required credits for advanced standing will be approved after this process. Domains included in these credits for acceptance in advance standing include but are not limited to: Different theoretical approaches to clinical practice; Components of unique characteristics of psychotherapy with special populations, including but not limited to the: Mentally ill, including psychoses, neuroses and interaction with medical approaches, Childhood issues, Adult population issues, Gerontological issues, Issues related to gender, sexual preference and ethnicity and Substance abuse and dual diagnosis. Matching theoretical approaches to clinical practice. Research methods, statistics, and design and research ethics. Clinical ethics Childhood and human development Psychotherapy practicum Graduation requirements include the following courses to be taken at IUGS: Behavioural Health Research I (3) credits Behavioural Health Research II (3) credits Dissertation or Project (18) credits The 8-day Graduate Seminar at the 10-day Residency (3) credits Credits required for the completion of the Doctoral Degree in Behavioural Health (93) Sequence 1. The student’s portfolio and transcripts are examined by the Dean after discussion with the student to determine his or her goals. 2. Advance standing course credits totalling (66) for the doctoral degree may be taken concurrently with the students other IUGS coursework. Students must complete the (66) advanced standing graduate credits for the doctoral degree prior to fulfilling their academic requirements in Behavioural Health. 3. Research I must be completed, approved, and filed before work on Research II begins. 4. The Graduate Seminar may be completed at any time during the student’s enrolment at IUGS, but must be completed prior to fulfilling their academic requirements in Behavioural Health. Instructional strategies will include, but not be limited to: 1. Assigned readings of texts and academic journal articles; 2. Seminar review of these assigned readings; 3. Interactive lectures; 4. Small group discussions, where students will evaluated on their level of participation; 5. Use of electronic media (Questia online library provided by the University and other sources selected by the student, Mentor, and Dean); 6. Examinations: cumulative and comprehensive examination to ensure subject matter mastery. [-]
