The growing crisis of the environment has changed social values and human behavior worldwide, thus encouraging research of environmental hazards and development of new technologies for protecting the environment. The problems of environmental protection are integrated and interdisciplinary, combining the knowledge from natural sciences, social sciences and humanities, technical sciences, medicine and others. Ecological problems that are often induced by poorly thought out economic measures, are defined by knowledge from natural sciences, solved with technical measures, having economic and legal bases and loaded with social consequences. Hence the integration of different disciplines provides the basis for successful problem solving in the field of environmental protection. As a rule, new knowledge and technical solutions typically emerge in border areas of different disciplines. At the same time, advanced experts in statistics are sought by various services, from state administration to research departments in different companies. In the past decades, statistics as an independent scientific discipline has made enormous contribution to science and society. It has become a tool applicable in diverse fields such as agriculture, biology, business and economics, education, engineering, law, medicine, the military, public administration, social sciences, etc. In the past few years University of Ljubljana organized interdisciplinary masters/doctoral program in the field of statistics which was very well accepted by the users. The interdisciplinary doctoral study program in Biosciences is a joint project of four faculties of the University of Ljubljana: the Biotechnical Faculty in the role of coordinator of the program and the Faculty of Computer and Information Science (FRI), Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FS) and Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FE) as co-implementers of the program. Scientific achievements in the field of basic and applied biosciences in the past decade and a half have lead to essential changes and corrections to the theory that had been valid for decades, which open completely new horizons in the study of the basic laws of the functioning of biological systems and enable the development of applications of which we never even dreamed a few decades ago. The fast development in numerous fields of biological research and ever new possibilities for the use of the new science are reflected in the ever greater need for basic and applied knowledge in modern societies, which also dictate suitable updating of doctoral study programs. The interdisciplinary doctoral program in Biosciences, together with taking into account the Bologna guidelines on quality, combines science and experience from the fields of agronomy, biology, bioinformatics, biotechnology, economics of natural resources, management of forest ecosystems, horticulture, landscape architecture, wood and biocomposites, nanosciences, nutrition, technical systems in biotechniques, protection of the natural heritage, cell sciences, animal sciences and animal breeding. The need for high quality and up-to-date doctoral study programs for obtaining suitable knowledge from the scientific spheres developed in various members of the University of Ljubljana, is also dictated by the fast and extensive development of these fields and their impact on the quality of life. The essential element of the program is connecting the contents from the field of Biosciences on the level of the University of Ljubljana with special care for new, boundary fields of research, often overlooked by the wider public, and which are not suitably represented in first and second level study programs. The doctoral study program in Biosciences is the response of the Biotechnical Faculty and associated partners, to the challenges of the time and it represents a combination of the most up-to-date knowledge in this field that, together with the commitment of domestic experts and visiting professors from abroad, we can offer in Slovenia. In addition to the Biotechnical Faculty, which is coordinating the program, FRI, FS and FE are also cooperating with the coordination of individual study fields, as well as nine other members of the University of Ljubljana, leading Slovene research institutes, economic organizations and academic and research institutes from abroad. The main stress of the doctoral studies is on research work, on interdisciplinary study and on the cooperation of internationally established domestic and foreign experts. Taking into account the recommendations of the European University Association (EUA), the program envisages the international exchange of students and, as a condition for ensuring the international comparability of high quality doctoral work, the publication of at least one scientific article in an internationally recognized scientific journal is required, which is an important part of candidates' research work. Particular stress is devoted to close cooperation between doctoral students and mentors, which gives the program a special tenor and Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program of Biosciences enables candidates, in agreement with their mentors, to design a personal program of education, which best suits their ambitions. GENERAL DATA ON THE PROGRAM The interdisciplinary doctoral study program of Biosciences is a level 3 program under the Bologna scheme. It lasts three years and covers 180 points or 4500 hours. One credit point is equivalent to 25 hours of a student's work. The study program is composed of an organized educational part, amounting to 60 credit points, while the remaining 120 credit points are devoted to individual research work for the doctoral thesis. The study requirements of the program are in accordance with the Higher Education Act and Criteria for Accreditation of Higher Education Institutions and study programs, adopted by the Council RS for Higher Education, assessed under the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The direct inclusion of parts of the program in international exchange with universities in countries that use the ECTS is thus possible. The aim of the program is to train doctoral students for scientific work in fields of basic and applied life sciences, so that they will be able to develop new knowledge within the framework of a scientific research career or transfer knowledge to everyday practice. The doctoral study programme ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES lasts three years and represents the transformation of existent direct doctoral programme, which was offered at the University of Nova Gorica since the academic year 1995/1996. Successfully completed study programme leads to the title “ Doktor znanosti” (equivalent to Doctor of Science). The courses are held in English language. Admission requirements To qualify for entry into the graduate program Environmental Sciences , applicants must satisfy the following admission requirements: have completed a 2nd cycle master’s study preogramme; have completed at least a four-year academic undergraduate programme accredited with 240 ECTS credits; have completed a uniform five year master’s study programme accredited with 300 ECTS credits; have completed a specialization after previously finished professional study programme, and had passed additional study obligations within 30 to 60 ECTS credit points; have completed an equivalent program abroad; If the number of applicants exceeds the 20 available slots, they are selected based on previous academic achievement. Educational and professional goals Protection of the environment demands an explicitly multidisciplinary approach and therefore adequately educated and trained experts are needed in the areas of environmental research, technology, conservation, management and policy development. One of the crucial problems in solving the environment issues is the lack of experts with appropriate multidisciplinary knowledge, who could successfully link together the experts with distinctive knowledge in natural and technical sciences on one side and the managers, lawyers and similar professionals on the other side. Therefore similar study programmes on undergraduate and also on graduate level are common worldwide. For this reason the main objective of this study programme is education of top experts with the multidisciplinary knowledge in the fields of environmental sciences.
