The range of expertise of the Environmental Studies doctoral program graduates is determined by the interdisciplinary nature of the studies, which focuses on environmental issues and issues regarding the dynamics of the relationships between the society and natural systems. The basis for the graduates is the specialization they obtained in their undergraduate degrees of studies. This specialization is developed within the doctoral studies in such a way that the graduates eventually: acquire in-depth knowledge of the theoretical bases of the scientific areas, they are applying while writing their doctoral theses, know the broad context of the environmental issues their dissertation is focusing on, develop a deep understanding of the methodology of all scientific areas they are applying while working on their dissertations. This knowledge is considered an essential prerequisite for interdisciplinary dialogue and research. Moreover, graduates are able to take the position of scientists in institutions fully focused on research and development in the broad area of subjects related to the environment and sustainable development, e.g. at various institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences. Furthermore, this part of the program offers ample opportunity to develop professional skills. The other half of the program is dedicated to an individual design project in collaboration with a company. During this design project the trainee is supported by an advisor from the company and an advisor from the university. A business plan for implementation or marketing of the designed product or process is part of the final deliverables. The trainee receives a Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng degree) after finishing the program successful. Smart Energy Buildings and Cities (SEB&C) The SEBC program trains excellent and highly motivated MSc graduates to become highly qualified technological designers. After the two year program our trainees are technological designers with a broad technological understanding of energy related disciplines in the built environment (mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, building physics and services and ICT), who excel in their own discipline and who are able to work in multidisciplinary design teams, contribute to design issues outside their own core disciplines, integrate different technologies into new products and concepts, and who understand the commercial aspects of these innovative products and concepts. This institute has operated since mid-2006 on behalf of four universities in the Netherlands as the 4TU.School for Technological Design, Stan Ackermans Institute CCTO Certification This program is recognized as a PDEng program by the CCTO, the Dutch certification institute for technological designer programs. Admission and application Application is open to university graduates from the Netherlands and other countries. You will at least need a Master of Science degree or equivalent, preferably in the exact sciences. There will be an assessment and selection procedure before you can enter the PDEng program. The PDEng programs use strict selection criteria to ensure the required high quality. Excellent marks, motivation and a design-oriented attitude are vitally important. Furthermore, through the established inter-library loan service initiative, students, once they have their supervisoràs signature, can order all the articles and books they need for their research--in case they are not available at the university"s library. The Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna provides three scholarships for non-EU citizens and four scholarships for Italian and EU ones.
