Engineering Ph.D. Program overview The doctorate program in engineering prepares the next generation of engineering leaders to tackle some of the most daunting and complex problems facing our society. The program's goal is to produce engineering graduates who are subject matter experts in a knowledge domain within an engineering discipline and who can compete successfully with those who have earned discipline-specific doctorates in engineering. Instead of restricting graduates to individual engineering fields (e.g., chemical, computer, electrical, industrial, mechanical, etc.) the program provides students with the flexibility to become subject matter experts and engineering innovators in an open-architecture environment, fostering intellectual growth along both interdisciplinary pathways and within the bounds of conventional engineering disciplines. With this approach, the program develops world-class researchers who can capitalize on the most promising discoveries and innovations, regardless of their origin within the engineering field, to develop interdisciplinary solutions for real-world challenges. The Ph.D. in engineering requires each student to address fundamental technical problems of national and global importance for the 21st Century. Four key industries–health care, communications, energy, and transportation–are addressed specifically. These industries impact every individual on the planet and are the focus areas doctoral candidates and faculty will contribute to through study and research. Curriculum The curriculum for the doctorate in engineering provides disciplinary and interdisciplinary courses, research mentorship, and engineering focus area seminars. Students are expected to have a disciplinary-rooted technical strength to conduct and complete independent, original, and novel collaborative interdisciplinary research contributing to one of the four industrial and/or societal focus areas. The program is comprised of 66 credit hours: 30 course credits, 6 engineering focus area credits, and 30 research credits. Core courses Students will complete the following core courses: Interdisciplinary Research Methods, Engineering Analytics Foundation, and Engineering Analytics Elective. Discipline foundation courses Foundation courses build depth within a disciplinary field of engineering, such as mechanical engineering, electrical and microelectronics engineering, computer engineering, industrial and systems engineering, chemical engineering, or biomedical engineering. Industry focus area courses Beginning with the course Translating Discovery into Practice, this rigorous set of four engineering courses provides students with comprehensive coverage of engineering challenges and solution approaches in the four key industry areas associated with the program: health care, energy, communications, and transportation. Students choose a focus area and complete the corresponding set of courses. Students can also take additional courses from their selected industry as electives. Focus area electives Students complete at least three focus area electives. These courses, selected from courses within current RIT degree programs and associated with the focus area of study chosen by the student, provide specialized knowledge and skill-sets relevant to the student’s dissertation research. Comprehensive exam Students complete a comprehensive exam at the end of their first year of study. The exam evaluates the student’s aptitude, potential, and competency in conducting Ph.D. level research. Dissertation proposal Students must present a dissertation proposal to their dissertation committee no sooner than six months after the comprehensive exam and at least six months prior to the candidacy exam. The proposal provides the opportunity for the student to elaborate on their research plans and to obtain feedback on the direction and approach to their research from his/her dissertation committee. Candidacy exam The candidacy exam provides comprehensive feedback to the student regarding their dissertation research progress and expected outcomes prior to defense of their full dissertation. Dissertation presentation and defense Each doctoral candidate will prepare an original, technically sound, and well-written dissertation. They will present and defend their dissertation and its accompanying research to their dissertation committee. A firm grasp of the fundamental principles, experimental techniques and current theories of chemistry is also required, and an extensive series of courses and seminars helps keep the student abreast of the latest developments in many fields. Students must demonstrate a breadth of understanding over the many areas of chemistry, a perspective of the relation of chemistry to other fields and expertise in the area chosen for dissertation research. We expect most students to complete their PhD programs in four years. Proficiency in a specialized area is established by cumulative examinations (commonly referred to as "cums"), offered 10 times a year in any of the following areas: analytical, inorganic, organic, or physical chemistry. Students are required to pass three out of eight of these exams in their major fields. The examinations may cover virtually any subject within the defined area, and provide the graduate curriculum committee with an assessment of the student's growth as a chemist. These exams begin no later than the second year of residence. A student may, together with the his or her faculty adviser, prepare a proposal, with justification, for an alternative comprehensive examination, and submit the proposal to the graduate curriculum committee for its approval. If approved, the research adviser and the student nominate a guidance committee of at least five faculty members, including at least one tenured chemistry faculty member who is not the dissertation research adviser, with a nominated chairman who is not the dissertation research adviser. After approval by the graduate curriculum committee, the guidance committee becomes responsible for administering a comprehensive examination of the approved format, and for monitoring the student's progress toward the degree. On completion of the "cums," each student takes an oral examination before a thesis committee, which uses this examination to determine whether the student has developed to the point where independent research can be appropriately carried out. Satisfactory completion of this examination is the final hurdle before completion of research and the presentation of a thesis. The most important and time-consuming component of the PhD program is, of course, the research. Each student is required to complete a significant piece of scientific inquiry, write a thesis describing the work and the conclusions to be drawn from that work, and then defend the worked before a committee of chemistry and non-chemistry faculty. Biological Chemistry and Biochemistry Track The graduate program in biological chemistry and biochemistry is a program for students wishing to specialize in the chemistry of biological systems. Students entering this program take a biochemistry placement examination in lieu of an organic, inorganic or analytical placement examination. In addition, a separate set of cumulative examinations is given, and students may count an additional course outside the department toward the minimum six to eight courses necessary for the PhD degree. Materials Chemistry Track An interdisciplinary graduate program in materials chemistry has been approved by the faculty. Students may take a materials and solid-state placement examination in lieu of the organic and analytical placement examinations. Relevant cumulative examinations are given, and courses outside the department are required toward the minimum courses necessary for the MS and PhD degrees. History The English Department currently serves approximately 75 students working toward the PhD and about 30 students in progress toward the MA degree. The English Department offers opportunities for study in all major areas of British and American literatures, with strengths in American Studies, British Modernities, Critical Theory, Gender and Sexualities, Medieval Studies, Early Modern and Renaissance Studies, Postcolonial Studies, Race, Empire, and Global Diasporas, Rhetorical Discourse, Ethnic Studies, Cultural Studies/ Science Studies, Creative Writing. Programs Ph.D. in English with a research dissertation Ph.D. in English with creative dissertation Literature Degrees: The MA in literature stresses breadth of knowledge in literature and theory. The Ph.D. program encourages students to pursue focused interests in literary periods or movements, theoretical models and schools, or global literature. Ph.D. candidates take field exams and write dissertations on specific areas of literary, critical or theoretical interest. Creative Writing Degrees: The MA and Ph.D. programs with a creative writing concentration offer a range of workshops, readings, and visiting writers. (Visiting faculty have included Charles Johnson, Galway Kinnell, Robert Creeley, Marvin Bell, W. D. Snodgrass, and Molly Peacock.) MA-CW students take courses in literature and writing and produce a creative thesis. Ph.D. students take courses in literature and writing, complete the same field exams as literature students, and produce novels, books of poems, or books of short stories for their dissertations. Admission Students entering the Ph.D. program in English usually are expected to have an MA in English literature. This does not preclude the admission of students whose education has been in other fields. (In these exceptional cases, candidates, in consultation with the graduate director, may be asked to undertake additional study.) After completing their courses, candidates specialize in three fields of scholarly interest preparatory to field examinations and in a specific area of expertise leading to the dissertation. The English Graduate Admissions Committee admits qualified students to the Ph.D. program on the basis of their total records, including transcripts, GRE general test, recommendations, and a sample of their critical writing (10 to 20 pages). Applicants who wish to choose the creative writing option for the dissertation should so indicate on the front page of the application and should submit a portfolio of their creative work (not more than 50 pages of fiction or 25 pages of verse) in addition to the critical writing sample. The deadline for application for the fall semester to the Ph.D. program, whether or not the student wishes to be considered for financial aid, is February 15. The deadline for application for the spring semester is November 15. Doctor of Philosophy Program Requirements Program of Study In consultation with the graduate director, the student plans a program of study comprising at least eight courses and begins to determine three areas of special interest (see below under "Field Exams"). As part of their eight-course minimum, students may take up to three creative writing workshops, no more than three appropriate courses in other departments, and no more than three graded courses from the same faculty member. Students may take no more than two independent studies. One of the eight required courses must be ENG 589, Teaching of College English. Beyond the eight-course minimum, these limitations do not apply. Students must maintain at least a B+ average to remain in the program; more than one C grade normally requires dismissal. Students not in residence must register each semester to remain in good standing. PhD Field Exams Coursework is normally completed at the end of the second year of doctoral study. Students are then expected to complete three distinct field examinations by the end of the third year (though many students will begin taking these examinations earlier.) While areas acceptable as fields of study are not predefined, they must be approved by the graduate director. A field of study may be defined in various ways: e.g. by nationality and chronology, genre, topic or critical theory. Students may coordinate their fields of study so that the time spent preparing for their examinations will provide a foundation for their dissertations, as well as preparation for their professional identities. In the fourth semester of coursework, each student, in consultation with the graduate director, works with a chosen professor to define each field examination, draw up a reading list, and pursue the topic chosen. All three examinations are normally administered in the third year of study. Detailed guidelines for PhD students working on field exams are available in the English Department Graduate Office. Foreign Language All PhD candidates must demonstrate a reading knowledge of at least one foreign language at a level of competence sufficient for the understanding of scholarly and critical materials. Such competence may be demonstrated in any one of four ways: Evidence of the student having passed a certified translation exam in a graduate program at some other institution. Presenting transcript evidence of at least three years (six semesters) of college-level study of a single foreign language (we will count as two semesters each, fourth and fifth year high school study in the same language) with a grade average of B or better, completed no more than five years before admission to the PhD program at Binghamton University. Successful completion of a graduate course in a foreign language, or of a graduate course in comparative literature in which a significant portion of the work is done in a foreign language. Successful completion of a graduate proficiency workshop and examination (TRIP 707). Dissertation In the course of doctoral study, the student establishes a dissertation committee consisting of a director and two readers. The dissertation is a substantial study of some significant topic in the area of the student's professional interest, or a creative writing dissertation for those students who are admitted to the creative writing dissertation option. The student's dissertation director must formally approve, and submit to the graduate director, a written prospectus of the dissertation, or for those submitting a creative dissertation a sample of work in progress, at least one semester prior to completing the dissertation. The prospectus or the sample of creative work in progress will be shared with all members of the dissertation committee. On completion of all other requirements, the student submits a finished dissertation for approval and defends the dissertation in an oral examination. The submitted dissertation must conform to the Graduate School requirements for a dissertation, as outlined in the Graduate School Handbook. After successful completion, defense, and submission of the dissertation, the student is awarded the PhD in English. Professional Development Through their thesis and dissertation projects students become well-versed in theoretical approaches, research, and bibliography. These skills prepare a student for continued success in academia, and our distinguished faculty also provides close guidance for those seeking publication. The department publishes its own literary journal Harpur Palate, which is edited by graduate students and enjoys both domestic and international circulation. Such editorial experiences are instrument for those wishing to pursue positions in periodical review or journalism. The University also hosts conferences and workshops for creative writers, such as the popular Readers' Series, that provide a chance to interact with visiting professionals in a variety of writing fields. PhD in Anthropology Anthropology seeks to understand the nature and origins of human biological variability, cultural diversity and social formations through systematic exploration, scientific examination and the application of theory to human populations and their artifacts, including their social configurations, past and present. Although anthropology has historically been most successful in the analysis of small sociocultural systems, its current challenge is to situate the direct objects of study in their global contexts in both space and time. The discipline draws freely on various fields of study in the humanities and in the social and natural sciences, and its diversity today is such that no single central mission earns a wide consensus. While training in the traditional four subfields of archaeology, biological anthropology, linguistic anthropology and social/cultural anthropology are offered in the department at Binghamton, students are encouraged to specialize along tracks that cross these sub-disciplinary boundaries. A central objective of graduate training in anthropology is the ability to develop an original research design and to communicate the research findings in a research paper, thesis or dissertation of publishable quality. All recipients of graduate degrees submit and defend formal, written demonstration of their ability to apply appropriate analysis to an original research project, except for the MS degree for which an oral demonstration of ability is required. The Doctor of Philosophy Degree The Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology is awarded to students who have shown mastery of the general materials of anthropology and a substantial command of the specialized subject matter of one or more of the four subfields, and who have successfully carried out and formally presented research judged to constitute an original contribution to the discipline. Admission to the Doctoral Program Students without substantial experience beyond the BA are not normally admitted directly to the PhD program. Although an MA is not required for admission or for the completion of the PhD, most students complete an MA in the course of their doctoral studies, either by submitting a thesis or through the two-paper option (see MA requirements). Applicants with graduate work at other universities are required to submit GRE aptitude test scores along with their applications, TOEFL where applicable (see MA Program admission requirements).
