Introduction

LUISS – Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali Guido Carli – is an independent university. It was created out of a pre-existing Roman institution, Pro Deo, between 1974 and 1978.

LUISS offers an innovative educational approach at its four Departments: Economics and Finance, Business and Management, Law, and Political Science. Its goal is not simply to convey knowledge but to instill flexibility in young people, giving them a sense of mastery over their future.

Furthermore, LUISS has four Schools for graduate and professional studies: the LUISS Business School, the School of Government, the School of Law, and the School of European Political Economy.

Economics Ph.D. is a four year program, totally taught in English, aimed at training international economists capable of contributing to the advancement of knowledge and expanding the frontiers of research in the economic disciplines. These economists are prepared for academic or professional careers in international institutions, central banks and with economic and/or regulatory policy makers, or in consulting firms and financial institutions. The program is designed to give students the ability to understand and elaborate a broad spectrum of economic problems and to provide up to date analytical, empirical and quantitative techniques. Students acquire the necessary skills to undertake both academic and professional careers, in universities, international research institutions, public authorities, central banks, consulting and financial institutions. During the program students focus on writing their doctoral dissertation and present their work in internal seminars, while following seminars or “reading groups” at LUISS or at EIEF (Einaudi Institute for Economics and Finance). The Ph.D. dissertation is expected to consist in an original and significant contribution to the chosen field of specialization. Academic year 2016/2017 For the academic year 2016/2017, five positions are available. All positions are tuition free. The five positions come with a scholarship (around 13.500 € per year). The application for admission must be submitted on line by March, 29 2016. In order for us to consider your application it is necessary that you submit a complete application. You must upload all of the requested documentation and supply correct referee details through our online application system. Once the procedure for submitting the application has been completed, the candidate will receive by email a copy of the application as a proof of the accuracy and validity of the procedure. Requirements Students applying for the Doctoral Program must have completed a Laurea Magistrale or a Laurea (vecchio ordinamento) or any other equivalent foreign (Master) degree no later than April 30, 2016. Students holding a Master degree granted by a foreign institution will need a legal transcript translated in Italian along with a Certificate of Validation (dichiarazione di valore) issued by an Italian Diplomatic Office from the same country where the degree has been granted. For applicants holding a foreign Master degree, the application will be accepted even if the Certificate of Validation is not provided. In this case, the admission to the Doctoral Program is conditional on providing the Certificate of Validation at registration. The PhD program in Law and Business, taught in Italian, is aimed at offering an advanced three year course of study that combines both theoretical and practical aspects of legal and regulatory issues regarding markets and business from a national, European, international and comparative perspective. The program is based not only on the analysis of relevant theoretical models but also on solving practical cases. The program, which addresses the demand for highly qualified professionals, ensures that doctoral candidates reach an appreciable level of academic and research autonomy along with an adequate capacity for criticism and analysis. Through research, academic activities and participation in seminars and courses, students will work on obtaining a solid academic grounding common to all areas of specialization. Therefore, PhD students must be able to investigate and analyze in depth, in an interdisciplinary manner, the theoretical and empirical research topics covered by the program. Students will spend 6/9 months abroad in a foreign university or scientific institute where they will be able to earn the required credits. Admission requirements The admission process is designed to establish the candidate’s knowledge, his/her aptitude for scientific research, and whether the PhD program’s research topics are suitable for the candidate. Admission is based on: An evaluation of the candidate’s academic qualifications and other relevant factors in the curriculum vitae; An evaluation of the publications submitted; An evaluation of the research project submitted, also with regard to the curricula covered by the PhD program; Once the curriculum vitae and research project have received a positive evaluation, candidates will take a written exam in accordance with the criteria specified in the call for applications. In the written exam, candidates can choose from six topics, irrespective of their research project. Specifically, two groups of subjects are identified for each curriculum. For each group of subjects, one topic is selected from the three topics suggested by the Commission, among specific themes. Non-Italian citizens and Italian citizens that reside abroad can write the exam in English. However, during the oral exam they will have to prove that they have an adequate knowledge of Italian; An oral exam relating to the research project submitted and related topics and issues. Candidates must also demonstrate a good command of English. Guidelines on the written exam In the written exam, candidates are asked to write an essay on one topic that they can choose among six drawn topics, irrespective of the scientific field of their research project. More specifically: For each of the three PhD curricula two Fields, as indicated below, are identified. This means that overall, there are six Fields; For each Field, one topic is drawn from the three different topics suggested by the Commission among the specific themes identified for each Field (see the list for each field). Candidates will not be summoned to take the written exam until at least 20 days after the date of publication of those admitted to the exam in question. The PhD in Management is an intense and rigorous four-year program that equips student with the research skills to become world-leading experts in their chosen field of studies. The program is entirely taught in English. Under the guidance of an internationally renowned faculty, students conduct independent field-based research in strategy, innovation and entrepreneurship, marketing, accounting, and corporate finance. Graduate students find placement primarily in academia and research institutions as well as in large consulting organizations and firms. The first two years of the program are dedicated to coursework, whereas the third and fourth years are dedicated to research and dissertation. To develop a program suited to their interests, students are encouraged to gain research experience by closely working with the LUISS faculty and to spend at least one semester at an internationally renowned research university. Throughout the program, students are exposed to seminars and workshops on publication strategies and approaches to the international job market. The PhD program in Politics: History, Theory, Science, totally taught in English, is aimed at giving participants the skills needed to embark on an academic or professional career in international institutions, NGOs, public and private research institutes, and political and institutional communications. The goal of the PhD program is to supply the tools needed to enter the current debate in philosophy and political theory, political, science and political history and to provide a forum in which this debate can continue and evolve in an advanced academic and internationally relevant context. The program, in collaboration with the Center for Ethics and Global Politics (CEGP), since 2004, is aimed to offer an interdisciplinary perspective on contemporary global political studies. The entire length of the program is three years. The coursework part is held in the first academic year. The second and the third years are generally devoted to the research work and can include a research fellowship period abroad (in agreement with the supervisor and with the Board of Professors). Recently, the program has been enriched by the collaboration of the International Center on Democracies and Democratizations (ICEDD) and the Italian Center for Electoral Studies - Centro Italiano Studi Elettorali (CISE).
