III cycle program: Doctoral program
The significance of doctoral program within the Bologna concept of studies was defined in the so-called “2003-Berlin Communiqué”. It was later confirmed in the “Bergen Communiqué” of May 2005, which definitely paved the path for the development of doctoral programs within the EU system of higher education (EHEA). In almost all EUA documents, doctoral studies have been defined as one of priorities for EU universities. The need for a qualitatively new and well structured doctoral program and a transparent system of monitoring students’ work has been defined as one of the main goals of the further development and integration of EU higher education area (EHEA) and EU research area (ERA). Such a program is conceived to be the first stage in young academics’ career. Advantages of doctoral studies, as defined in EHEA/EUA documents are reflected in: - Joint definition of a clear mission and vision in profiling doctoral candidates into researchers; - Ensuring a research environment and promoting cooperation in a few different disciplines; - Provision of clear managing structure for doctoral programs, status of candidates and supervisors, as well as of a clear doctoral candidate’s profile; - Re-defining the supervisor’s role; - Organizing a transparent process of candidate admission; - Providing varied forms of classes, compulsory and electives; - Ensuring broader possibilities in terms of students’ career development; - Guaranteed implementation and monitoring of quality system; - Broadening possibilities in terms of students’ mobility, and international cooperation. Duration of doctoral programs within the Bologna concept of studies varies depending on the way of classes delivery they use. It is usually 3-4 years for full-time doctoral programs, while part-time programs may last longer. Within the new ECTS-based concept of studies that School of Economics and Business in Sarajevo adopted in 2005, two doctoral programs are offered: - PhD – Doctor of Philosophy Program (Economics, Management/Business) – a three-year academic and research oriented program, with 180 ECTS. - DBA – Doctor in Business Administration (Executive Doctorate or “professional doctorate”) – a practice oriented, three-year doctoral program, also with 180 ECTS credit points.
