Program Description

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Mathematical Sciences

The Department offers programs towards the Master of Science, Master of Science in Teaching, and the Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematical Sciences. There are two areas of concentration: pure mathematics and applied mathematics. The programs emphasize the interaction between these two areas and the common role of scientific computation. Students can take courses common to both areas, enabling them to gain an appreciation of the mathematical techniques and the connections between theory and applications.

Department research interests include classical analysis, harmonic analysis, Fourier analysis, approximation theory, algebra, number theory, graph theory, combinatorics, fluid mechanics, biomathematics, differential equations, numerical analysis, and modeling.

Requirements for Admission to Graduate Studies for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy

Because of the breadth of pure and applied mathematics, it is recognized that applicants for admission will have diverse backgrounds. Admission requirements are therefore flexible. Applicants should have demonstrated strength in either pure or applied mathematics, a bachelor's degree with a major in mathematics or a closely related discipline, and satisfactory scores on the general Graduate Record Examination.

Requirements for Advancement to Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy

Successful completion of three qualifying examinations, two written and one oral, in one of the areas of concentration.

Minimum Degree Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy

Each student must complete the three qualifying exams and an approved plan of study including at least 75 credit hours in course work or dissertation research. The student is required to write a doctoral dissertation and pass a final oral defense of that dissertation. The Department requires two semesters of college-teaching experience. Students are expected to demonstrate appropriate proficiency in the use of computers. There is no formal language requirement.

Graduates of our programs are employed in the computer, communications, information, financial, and pharmaceutical industries; in engineering and consulting firms; in the insurance industry as actuaries; in schools, colleges, and universities; in government agencies; and in a wide variety of other occupations requiring strong analytical and problem solving abilities.
