The PhD programme is industry-driven and is based on strong academic fundamentals, emphasising robust and rigorous knowledge in Islamic finance.

On campus study

Our campus is close to the city center of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; one of the most vibrant Islamic financial markets in the world. The industry is supported by numerous government initiatives to further strengthen the country’s position as an international Islamic financial centre.

PhD candidates benefit from access to a wide range of local courses and seminars. In addition, INCEIF also has close relationship with Bank Negara Malaysia (Central Bank of Malaysia) and Islamic financial institutions locally and internationally.

PhD candidates are encouraged, at an early stage in their programme, to participate in local and international workshops and conferences.

Entry Requirements

PhD by Coursework and Dissertation

  • Masters degree or equivalent from a recognised institution of higher learning;
  • Applicants for PhD by Coursework and Dissertation must submit an essay on career development/goal not exceeding 3 pages; arial font size 12, double-spaced.

PhD by Research

  • Masters degree or equivalent from a recognised institution of higher learning;
  • A minimum 5 years work experience in financial institutions; &
  • Submission of a research proposal
  • Applicants for PhD by Research must submit a research proposal not exceeding 10 pages; arial font size 12, double-spaced.

Both programme require English proficiency is also a must. Applicants whose native language is other than English must have one of the following:

  • Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a score of 550;
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) level 6
  • Exceptions from English language proficiency can be given to those whose medium of study at entry level is English.

It is essential that all candidates speak, write and understand English fluently. The greater your fluency in English, the more you will benefit from the programme for the following reasons:
