TSM Doctoral Programme offers five in-depth fields of study, for a curriculum of unusual richness and breadth. Since the program enrolls only 10 to 20 new Ph.D. students each year, doctoral students thrive in an atmosphere of intellectual rigor and creative collaboration among students and faculty.
Welcome to the Doctoral Program in Management at TSM
Thank you for your interest in the Doctoral Programme at Toulouse School of Management (TSM). TSM is part of Toulouse Capitole University, one of the oldest and most renowned universities in France, and mixes aspects of a public research-intensive institution with an international approach to management education and strategic autonomy.
Our affiliated research center, TSM Research (UMR 5303 CNRS / TSM-UT1), is one of only four research centers in the management sciences that are accredited by the French National Centre for Scientific research.
Furthermore, the Doctoral Programme partners with two other research laboratories in Toulouse and its region:
- the Laboratoire Gouvernance et Contrôle Organisationnel (EA 7416 / Université Paul Sabatier),
- TBS Research Centre, which belongs to the internationally accredited Toulouse Business School (TBS).
Our doctoral students can choose one of five tracks:
- Accounting-Auditing- Management Control,
- Human Resource Management & Organisational Behaviour,
- Strategy and International Management.
The Programme includes a rich foundation of courses and seminars in the first two years, some of which are offered across disciplines and others in very small group settings to allow a high degree of specialization. Up to the completion of the Ph.D., we support students through a program of seminars - including research talks, writing and publishing seminars, as well as job market preparation and support. The majority of our students also gain teaching experience at the undergraduate and Master’s levels. Furthermore, a package of full doctoral scholarships, annual conference travel, and research support (from the second year onwards) ensures that students can progress under good conditions and fully integrate into international research networks in their field. Our goal is to prepare students in the best possible way for their future roles in academia, where about 90% of our alumni work, or in policy institutions, research organizations, and private companies.
In 2020, the TSM Doctoral Programme (TSM-DP) has been awarded the prestigious EPAS accreditation, delivered by the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD). The EPAS accreditation confirms the quality of all facets of our program provision: from its institutional, national, and international environment, through its design, delivery, outcomes, and impacts, to its quality assurance processes. It particularly emphasizes academic rigor, practical relevance, internationalization, ethics, and sustainability.
The doctoral program is full time, with one intake each year in autumn. Research training is only offered on-site: no distance learning option is available. The typical completion time is five years.
Toulouse School of Management offers an intensive doctoral program for individuals interested in conducting independent research. Our program combines the best of theory, practice, and research methods with scholarly integrity. The courses are accompanied by research practice. Graduates pursue careers in leading universities and business schools, policy-oriented institutions, and private firms.
To follow international best practices, research at Toulouse School of Management begins in the second year of the Master, with a dedicated research program, and during two years, the curriculum of the doctoral program emphasizes four essential areas of training for doctoral students:
- research tools and methodology
- in-depth study of their research field
- skills to conduct independent research leading to high-level publications
- career development
Students who successfully complete the first year of the program are awarded a Master of Science and may choose to end their formal training. The goal of this one-year program is to provide students with the quantitative, analytical, and theoretical tools for a successful academic or industry-oriented career. Therefore the students’ research program and dissertation phase begin in March of this first year.
In year 2 of the Doctoral Program students dig further ideas, theoretical background, models, methodology, and their research protocol in close relationship with their advisors. Thus students gradually become more involved in the design and execution of original research. By the end of the second year, our doctoral candidates are awarded an MPhil in Management (TSM certificate program in Advanced Management Science) and have a solid foundation on which to build their thesis project and some will have produced a paper suitable for publication.
The later years of the doctoral program are dedicated to original research and the creation of a Ph.D. dissertation. Students are given the opportunity to develop their own rigorous and groundbreaking ideas. Ph.D. candidates participate in the life of the department, including seminars. They also present their research work in junior and senior workshops, are encouraged to participate in international conferences and international visiting periods, and, finally, defend their dissertations.
A Bachelor’s degree (in the US), the completion of the first year of a Master (in Europe), or an equivalent diploma, representing a four-year course of study in an accredited college or university, is required for admission. A completed Master’s degree is not required, although many applicants have a Master’s degree in such fields as management, finance, economics, engineering, psychology, statistics, or other related fields. Superior academic performance is expected.
European students with a Master’s in Research are also welcome to apply. Successful applicants would gain exemption from certain lectures and, depending on their background, would follow a sequence of lectures covering approximately one year instead of two.
Each application will be carefully studied by the professors in the field of specialization, and by the Doctoral Programme Council composed of professors from all fields.
The academic year starts in early September.
