Program Description

Doctoral Programme in Law

European University Institute (EUI)

The Law Department offers a four-year Ph.D. programme leading to the award of a doctorate. An LL.M. degree is awarded upon the successful completion of the first year of the Ph.D. programme.

Researchers follow a structured programme of research and training. A wide range of seminars and workshops is offered in key fields, many of which are linked to research projects in the Law Department, or are interdisciplinary and organised jointly with other departments of the EUI.

Researchers gain experience in presenting their work and are encouraged to participate in conferences, workshops and the department's very active working groups. They may enrich their programme with research missions around the world or on exchange programmes with partner institutions.

Research Themes

The Department’s programme covers European Union law; constitutional law; international economic law; human rights law; competition, labour and social law; legal informatics; legal theory and philosophy; and European and transnational private law.

These areas are reflected in the areas of supervision supported by our department, as well as the high-level research and theses produced by our department.
