From Day 1, participants start working on their research, and the program is designed to ensure that students carry out long-term research projects that are highly relevant to management practice and are based on up-to-date scientific knowledge.
The content of the workshops focuses on the development of research methods. All applicants have managerial expertise and a Master’s/MBA degree; therefore, the courses do not repeat the content of MBA studies. Our DBA approach leads to intellectual contributions, as demonstrated by our students’ and graduates’ outstanding publication records.

The Doctorate of Business Administration (DBA) program is divided into two stages:
Stage I: Training in Doctoral Research in Management Sciences
Philosophy, Methods, and Tools
DBA students start by learning methods and techniques for research design, data collection, and data analysis in order to conduct, analyze, author, and publish research that meets doctoral standards. Students complete a series of research training workshops that are held Online, in France, or in the United States.
Between workshops, students prepare a detailed research thesis proposal, complete a pilot study, and perform individual research and research fieldwork under the direction of doctoral supervisors. In order to proceed to Stage II, students are required to produce three pieces of written work. These include:
An extended research proposal (1,500 to 4,000 words);
A comprehensive publishable literature review (5,000 to 20,000 words); and
A preliminary thesis (15,000 to 30,000 words).
Successful completion of Stage I leads to the awarding of the Certificate in Research in Management Sciences.
Stage II: Thesis
The DBA research and thesis portion of the program consists primarily of individual research under the supervision of a qualified professor who has an international reputation in technology management, business innovation, and organizational change management and provides a broad range of subject-area expertise.
The DBA thesis should exhibit substantial evidence of original scholarship that meets publishing standards and provides useful managerial recommendations.
DBA candidates are required to show their ability to conduct original investigations; test, apply and examine their own and others’ ideas; and understand the relationship between their themes and wider fields of knowledge.
Candidates may be required to identify current issues and apply relevant theories for problem-solving.
Your DBA Supervisor
Each DBA candidate is assigned a research-active professor from Grenoble Ecole de Management or a partner institution. Our Faculty provides a wide range of expertise and an international reputation in research on business innovation, technology management, and the organizational dimensions of technological change. The supervisor helps the student define and carry out a DBA research project until his or her final thesis defense.
Faculty who supervise doctoral students at GEM have the opportunity to work with candidates who have met our demanding selection criteria. These students are often given privileged access to top-tier research in the fields of business and organizations, which provides them exciting opportunities for high-impact, novel research, and joint publications.

Admission & application
Candidates should hold or expect to hold a Master's degree in management (MBA, MA, MSc, or equivalent) or in a related discipline from an accredited institution.
Candidates should have at least five years of professional managerial experience either pre- or post-Master's degree.
All of the DBA workshops are conducted in English.
GMAT or other English tests are not requested, however, English abilities will be evaluated by the Program Director during the interview.
Acceptance to the Program
Acceptance will be based on a preliminary interview with the Program Directors, in person or by video call/telephone call once all application materials have been received.
Final decision will be made by an Admissions Board.

Lessons Learned from a Working Mom with Two Doctorates.
"When you begin a DBA program, you tell people you are getting a doctorate, but the truth is your doctorate is getting you! You will sacrifice time, relationships, and sleep—pushing yourself to limits you could not have previously attained. You boldly dive into the unknown depths of statistics, academic articles, theory, and a writing style that is foreign to your prior communications. It will be full of expected and unexpected challenges as well as growth and success. The process will be exhilarating and messy all at once, and the end product will be more than a degree. It will be developed and changed you.
Getting a doctorate will stretch and grow you to a new capacity. Indeed, it pushed me beyond my perceived capabilities and enabled me to accomplish more than I ever imagined. I boldly entered an area outside of my comfort zone and embraced news tasks despite my doubts and fears. I was empowered knowing I can do all things with the support of my loved ones, the equipment of my Lord, and the resources of my training. I have been asked how I successfully managed to combine family, work, research, and life for not just one, but two doctorates. I would love to detail specific steps that anyone could take, but the truth is the process was one of the most overwhelming events in my life. Certainly, determination and an in-depth focus are essential to persevering because there will be days you question your ability to continue! My motivation was connected to my calling to teach and my passion for reaching my fullest potential as a scholar. It is essential to stay curious and open-minded while maintaining a positive outlook because you can do this!
Before beginning a program, some intrinsic motivator must thrust you to persevere, no matter the obstacles!
The best way to balance things is to accept there is no balance. The process of earning a doctorate, working full-time, raising kids, attending to self-care, and nurturing a marriage is not attainable at the before-your-doctorate levels. I lowered my standards, preserved resources, and did my best to take care of what I could. I juggled multiple balls, and while one ball was in the air capturing my full focus, the other balls were bouncing around. There is a natural frustration when contending with more than one can handle at once, and the emotional pull of competing priorities is intense when trying to compartmentalize your life. The mom in me missed every moment I was not with my children but with the literature. The wife in me felt guilt when watching my husband sacrifice as he wrestled with laundry, work, shuffling kids, and cleaning. In contrast, I wrestled with t-tests, manipulation checks, theoretical models, and multivariate statistics. My advisors and professors were an essential part of the process. I was once told the third most-crucial choice in your life after your spouse and your dissertation topic is choosing your advisor. Indeed, her feedback and suggestions challenged my skillsets and advanced them. Grenoble has a wealth of resources through their doctoral faculty, and that support provides the structure to persevere.
I set out to get doctorate degrees, but what happened was my doctorate degrees got me. It is not that I have a superpower that enabled me to achieve two doctorate degrees. The sacrifice and support of my loved ones, the equipment of my Lord, and the teaching from my advisors and professors catapulted me into the best version of myself. These same resources are available for you to reach the fullest potential on your doctoral journey; as long as you remember something, the secret to balance is unbalanced!"
