DBA Overview

DBA is the terminal degree in business and management education that combine highly developed knowledge and “research in action”. DBA and PhD

A DBA degree differs from a Philosophical Doctor (Ph.D.) through its focus on practice, policy, or strategy, within the context of the individual's workplace. Both doctorates involve the development of substantial original work. However, a professional doctorate such as the DBA requires a different type of research development from that of the Ph.D. For a Ph.D., research often needs to make a significant contribution to theoretical literature, whereas the research involved in the DBA is generally applicable to more specific business issues and is carried out in the context of professional practice.

DBA Objectives

DBA from an accredited University will give the participant an opportunity to target 3 areas in the following careers:

  • Consultant: To prepare the participant for a career in management consulting at the senior executive level
  • Researcher: To equip participant with the knowledge and skills in order to conduct an original empirical research
  • Faculty Member: To develop participant expertise and skills required in order to become a college or school faculty member in a business area

The DBA is a Research Degree

The research and thesis portion of the program consists primarily of individual research, under the supervision of qualified professors who provide a broad range of expertise as well as an international reputation. Every selected student will receive rigorous and tailor-made coaching by our doctoral faculty. The program can cover traditional research topics in fields such as management, finance, marketing, organizational behavior, as well as non-traditional topics depending on students’ needs. Virtually all topics are accepted as long as the research is connected to management. A DBA candidate is required to show his or her ability to: conduct original investigations; test, apply and examine his or her own ideas as well as others; understand the relationship between his or her theme and a wider field of knowledge. Candidates are required to identify current issues and apply relevant theories for problem-solving

Structure

Candidates are required to identify current issues and apply relevant theories for problem-solving.
The degree is granted based entirely on a personal thesis of approx. 50,000 words (no less than 35,000 words).
Quality of research is the single most important factor for awarding the DBA degree.

Stage 1

Courses + topic selection (jointly defined by the student and the faculty) + detailed research proposal 6 months maximum.

There are 4 compulsory DBA courses. Each course is conducted over an intensive 4 days period (2 seminars in year 1, 2 in year 2.

  • Thesis Management: Writing for success
  • Quantitative Research Methods
  • Qualitative and mixed research Methods

Stage 2

Literature review writing + specific hypotheses design:6 months max.
15,000 words, no less than 10,000 words.

Stage 3

Hypothesis testing (empirical data collection) + thesis writing end:10 months max
35,000 words not less than 25,000
The actual completion and duration of the program will depend on the student’s availability, research capacity, and written work. While 100% success cannot be guaranteed, students that are able to persist in their work and write in an effective manner will surely reach the end of the process.

Admission

Master degree, or equivalent, from an approved University or equivalent and significant professional experience.

Authorization, Accreditation, Memberships

Geneva cantonal authorization Department of Education, University of Business and International Studies (UBIS) operates under the authorization of the Geneva Cantonal Department of Education.

Swiss quality label for further education institutions (EduQua), is the Swiss national premier quality assurance body and the first Swiss quality certification label geared towards adult continuing education for public and private educational institutions in Switzerland. EduQua is an accreditation body recognized and supported by the Swiss Confederate Government.

The International Accreditation Council for Business Education (IACBE) is an educational accreditation agency for college and university business programs. It is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). It is also a member of the International Network for Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education - (INQAAHE). The IACBE accredits associate's, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral-level degree programs in business and business-related fields at institutions with bachelor's and/or graduate degree programs throughout the world

The Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) is a United States organization of degree-granting colleges and universities. It is a national advocacy of academic quality through accreditation in order to certify the quality of higher education accrediting organizations, including regional, faith-based, private, career, and programmatic accrediting organizations. CHEA has approximately 3,000 academic institutions as members and currently recognizes approximately 60 accrediting organizations. CHEA is based in Washington, DC.

The International Network for Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education (INQAAHE) is a worldwide association of near 300 organizations active in the theory and practice of quality assurance in higher education. The great majority of its members are quality assurance agencies that operate in many different ways. INQAAHE works with (CHEA in USA, ENQA in Europe) to control educational quality in around 140 countries and around 280 members.

The European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) is an international not-for-profit association, based in Brussels, Belgium. Europe's largest network association in the field of management development, it has over 890 member organizations from academia, business, public service and consultancy in 88 countries.EFMD operates the EFMD Quality Improvement System (EQUIS), which is one of the leading international systems of quality assessment, improvement, and accreditation of higher education institutions in management and business administration.

The European Council for Business Education (ECBE) is to accredit schools of business from across Europe to ensure excellence in business education and teaching. ECBE's accreditation process is based upon self and peer evaluation aimed to ensure the continual improvement of educational quality
