Read the Official Description

The PhD program in Psychology by the ULL aims to train doctors in different fields of psychology. Through the doctoral program, students will be able to obtain the theoretical, technical and practical knowledge necessary for advanced research in four main areas: Clinical and Health Psychology, Neuroscience of Cognition and Emotions, Language Psychology, Education and Methodology and Intervention and Family, Social and Community Mediation.

Justification of the title

The Doctorate Program in Psychology that is presented here to be taught according to RD 99/2011, integrates the different doctoral programs in force and in extinction of the Faculty of Psychology. in a single doctoral program. This previous experience in the delivery of doctoral programs with similar characteristics to the one presented here comes from the conversion of previous doctoral programs with a Quality Mention and that some of them received a favorable report from the ANECA in order to obtain the Mention to Excellence in its first call as described below.

Previous history

The Universidad de La Laguna has more than 30 years of experience in the organization and delivery of Psychology studies. Throughout this period, Psychology studies have had a high demand which is maintained at present. During all this time, doctorate training has been imparted in its different formats or modalities (courses, programs) and in accordance with the existing training structures: initially as part of the doctorate of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, but with specific training in Psychology (this was included in parentheses in the title), later within the Faculty of Philosophy and Education Sciences, and, finally, with the creation of the Psychology Faculty, as a specific doctorate in Psychology. From the creation of the Faculty and the departments most linked to the degree of Psychology (Dept. of Personality, Evaluation and Psychological Treatments, Dept. of Cognitive, Social and Organizational Psychology, Dept. of Evolutionary Psychology and Education and Dept. of Psychobiology and Methodology of Behavioral Sciences), doctoral programs in Psychology were formalized and, with minor modifications, have been maintained until the appearance of the new regulations. If we focus on the last five years, 5 doctoral programs have been taught in the Faculty of Psychology, 3 of them are valid according to decree 1393/2007, and two others are in the process of extinction. These doctoral programs are integrated into the current proposal in the new Doctorate Program in Psychology by the Universidad de La Laguna . The quality of this doctorate offer is another factor to be taken into account: three of the doctorate programs that are integrated obtained a Quality Mention: Cognitive Neuroscience and Education, Intervention and Family Mediation and Text and Speech Comprehension; and the first two passed the ANECA criteria for obtaining the Mention for Excellence in its first call.

Research capacity of the Faculty of Psychology

As corresponds to its history, the School of Psychology of the ULL has a research potential that is supported by a series of objective indicators. One of them is the rankings that value production by fields and scientific disciplines, as is the case of the recognized I-GR ranking by Fields and Scientific Disciplines, which is supported by ISI impact factor publications. In this ranking, in its last edition (2012), the ULL appeared as 5th university of the Spanish State in Psychology in the section of scientific disciplines (and among the first 5, it occupied the 2nd position in qualitative impact related to the citations received). It can be consulted in the following link.

Potential demand of the Doctoral Program in Psychology

The potential demand of the Doctorate Program in Psychology and its interest for society is supported by the same reasonable and sustained demand from postgraduate students for doctoral programs of similar characteristics that have been taught in the Faculty of Psychology of the Universidad de La Laguna Thus, for example, the registration and thesis data read, according to the data provided by the Vice-rectorate of Postgraduate, New Studies and European Higher Education Area, indicate that 114 students have been enrolled and 54 theses have been read in the last five years.

Another factor to be highlighted, relevant to the potential demand of the new Doctorate Program in Psychology, refers to the broad set of official master's degrees with several editions and which have a notable number of students.

To illustrate this point, the number of students enrolled in each of them in the past academic year 2012/13 is indicated below. The strength of this master's degree offers a reasonable and sustained demand from postgraduate students to the Doctorate Program, which, on the other hand, has the inescapable function of meeting this demand with the necessary quality standards.

In sum, the data above is a guarantee of the sustainability of the Doctoral Program in Psychology.

One potential to review with respect to the masters that are being taught is its ability to attract students from the Ibero-American sphere whose presence is reinforced year after year. The number of theses read in the last five years (54) also suppose an endorsement to the viability of the doctorate program, as well as the number of students enrolled in the set of doctoral programs that are integrated in the new doctoral program in Psychology (114).

Potential researcher of the PhD program in Psychology

Regarding the scientific productivity demonstrated in the program itself, this is accredited by the solvency of its staff of researchers / doctors in terms of sexennes and publications. Many of these researchers occupy first positions of the ranking of professors in Spain in scientific productivity in studies that cover the period 2004-2009 and that we are going to enumerate next. According to the results obtained by (*) Musi-Lechuga, Olivas-Ávila, Portillo-Reyes and Villalobos-Galvis (2005) in a study published in the journal Psicothema in which the scientific production of Spanish Psychology is analyzed through the records of articles in journals included in the Web of Science database of the Professors (CU) and Professors (PTU) of the different academic areas of Psychology, some of these researchers are among the ten professors with the highest production of articles of journals registered in the Web of Science database in their respective areas of knowledge. According to the study conducted by (**) Salgado and Páez (2007) are also among the ten researchers with h * highest of the six areas of knowledge in which academic psychology is divided in Spain.

More recently, according to the results obtained by (*) Olivas-Ávila and Musi-Lechuga (2010) in a study published in the journal Psicothema in which the scientific production of the most productive teachers of Psychology in Spain is analyzed. of Science, many of these professors are in the top ranking positions among the ten professors with the highest production of journal articles registered in the Web of Science database in their respective areas of knowledge.

Likewise, it is worth noting the significant production in publications of the theses read, as indicated in section 6 of Human Resources. The ability to attract research resources is demonstrated by the 14 competitive national projects that support the lines of research that make up the ULL PhD program in Psychology. Finally, in terms of quality and solvency of the human resources and equipment provided, the program is endorsed by the success of the previous programs, their continuity, and the fact of having obtained three of them Quality Mention, as it has already been described.

Integration of the PhD program in Psychology at the Doctoral School of the ULL

It should be noted that the PhD program in Psychology would be integrated into the Doctoral School of the ULL. In the Governing Council of September 26, 2013, the ULL Doctoral School was approved. While this is put into full operation will act as indicated in the Resolution of January 17, 2013, which provides the publication of the Regulation of Official Teaching Doctorate of the Universidad de La Laguna ,

In this resolution, the foundations have been laid for the organization of their doctoral programs adapted to the new regulation. This is to maintain their indicators in terms of doctorate and establish a strategy that will allow to enhance their research results, taking them beyond those in the present.

The idea is that their new doctoral programs act as tractors of the research developed in the institution, and promote greater attention to their researchers in training, while regulating the extinction processes of doctoral programs articulated according to previous regulatory provisions.

Integration of the doctorate program in the IDI strategy of the ULL

The PhD program in Psychology is part of the IDI strategy of the ULL, which includes the development of the Tricontinental Atlantic Campus (CEI-CANARIAS) (International Campus of Excellence), a space of excellence that should be from 2015 Atlantic reference in Europe as the receiving axis and catalyst of talent in teaching, research, innovation and transfer projects with Africa and Latin America and, under the common denominator of a model of integral sustainability for its development. The Campus is already an essential element for the development towards the new economic, productive and social structure of the Canary Islands. One of the actions of the aforementioned Atlantic Tricontinental Campus is directly linked to the research lines of the PhD program in Psychology. In this case we refer to action # 8 (Wolfgang Köhler Atlantic Neuroscience Center) whose main objectives are the incorporation of lines of research and intervention that have an impact on the quality of life of people in the field of neurosciences (cycle vital, neuro-degenerative disorders, risk groups, etc.); the promotion of transfer of results in the design of intervention strategies and development of cooperation; workshops in neuroscience for researchers from the African continent and from Ibero-America, creation of a tri-continental program of mobility and recruitment of talents; graduate teaching, etc. Likewise, results are expected in terms of improving diagnosis and intervention systems in mental health and learning difficulties, designing intervention strategies to improve the quality of life; encourage the mobility and recruitment of talents among researchers at a tri-continental level, etc.

The improvements in competitiveness start from a sustainable and global approach, which will strengthen key sectors, strengthen new sectors linked to the thematic specialization areas of the Campus and help generate employment. This model will take advantage of the geostrategic position of the Canary Islands as a bridge from Europe to West Africa, Macaronesia and Latin America. That is why the Tricontinental Atlantic Campus will act as a university axis within the national project to reinforce the Canary Islands as a tricontinental strategic European bridge in the Atlantic.

The subprojects that define it cover all areas of excellence: teacher improvement, adaptation to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), scientific improvement, innovation and knowledge transfer, campus transformation and internationalization. Within this scope, the doctoral program in Psychology is precisely inserted.

In the CEI-CANARIAS educational platforms of quality and excellence are developed from the framework of the International School of University Postgraduate Programs, at the same time as great infrastructures of excellence are reinforced. In fact, they have been teaching a series of University Master's and Doctoral Programs in the Psychology Faculty, many of them with a Quality Mention, and that now are intended to be integrated into a single Doctoral Program in Psychology, which have allowed to attract students and excellent researchers of international prestige. The effort and progress of the ULL has been fundamental in recent years, as a catalyst for talent through its training activities, making about 80% of the research done in the Canary Islands, transferring knowledge generated to society and the productive fabric and acquiring real commitments for a productive model based on knowledge.

The ULL actively participates with the Science-Technology Park of Tenerife SA, being a sample the Center for Biomedical Research of the Canary Islands (CIBICAN). The choice of the material-sustainability axis as a preferential one in the ID activities to be developed in the future Scientific and Technological Pole, PCT La Laguna, associated with the PCCT, has as fundamental arguments, on the one hand, the research resources currently available on the part of the Universidad de La Laguna and, on the other hand, the strategic demand for research results in the mentioned areas, both public and private.
