General purpose

To train researchers who are capable of designing and directing projects and research groups that address regional and national social problems.

Specific objectives

  • Develop skills and competences for the design, evaluation and conduct of social research projects.
  • Generate in the graduates the competencies for the training of human resources (researchers and evaluators) in the areas of Social Sciences.
  • To train individuals capable of evaluating projects and strategies based on multidisciplinary social research, aimed at solving real problems in regional and national environments.
  • Promote interdisciplinary research in the Social Sciences, establishing the bases for the effective, controlled and productive integration of the different areas of social knowledge.

  • He will master the theoretical and methodological foundations and assumptions of the multi and interdisciplinary research process, projecting them into guidelines for action aimed at the solution of socially relevant problems.

At the end of the Doctorate program, it is expected to contribute to the society researchers trained in the strategies of integration of methodologies, techniques and research models in Social Sciences, capable of proposing original, innovative and critical works in the field of study of the different lines of Integral Postgraduate Research It will attend on the one hand, to the discussion and more recent contributions of the Social Sciences and, on the other, to the study of the phenomena that are presented as fundamental for the development of society.

The graduate of the program will have extensive knowledge of social theories that explain social events. It will also have the knowledge to develop multidisciplinary social research and the necessary practice to propose specific solutions to specific social problems. Lines of generation and / or application of knowledge of the program.

  • Emerging Social Problems in Culture and Ethno-Development. This line has as its central themes the cultural confrontation, the memory and the human communication; aspects that according to Hobsbawm (2008), are as important part of global capitalism as the flow of goods and capital can be today. In this logic, the necessary area of research is addressed, which has to do with identity, multiculturalism and regional social practices related to collective memory and the limits of understanding between social groups with conflicting interests (Hernández, 2003). In the complicated transnational neighborhood environment between Arizona and Sonora, with open cultural confrontations, multi-ethnic migration and groups of armed civilians on the US side, the issues addressed here are of vital importance; from the above, they account for expressions of racism and, above all, deaths of undocumented persons for almost a decade (Humane Borders, 2010). Many of the regional social phenomena, such as the seasonal migration described above, have a non-predictable emergency context, so this line aims to react quickly in the study of non-cyclical and self-instituting social phenomena.
  • Social Development and Educational Processes. Its field of convergence includes themes such as the family, social exclusion and the study of marginalization, as they are considered relevant and conflicting aspects in the Latin American concert (Sánchez, 2008); this, without neglecting their local manifestations, which, according to national specialists, require interdisciplinary monitoring by regions (Núñez, 2010). Of particular interest for the State of Sonora, due to the magnitude that it represents, is to address the problem of population aging and the ways in which the family must be modified to deal with this issue, since it has been determined that by 2030 the 17th percent of Sonorans will be older adults (Grijalva et al., 2007). Along with the above, the investigation of forms of access to education, use and educational reforms will be addressed with special attention. It deals with areas of opportunity detected as critical in the national environment by international evaluating bodies (CERI, 2004), and it is intended to establish in the same way an area to influence proposals arising from scientific research for the improvement of regional education processes -global in environments marked by the growing demand for education, inequality in the competition in access and minority school attendance (Martínez, 2002). The priority character of this LGAC is visible in the multiplicity of challenges that the State of Sonora will face in the immediate future.
  • Globalization and Sustainability. The LGAC of Globalization and Sustainability addresses the problems of the individual in relation to the environment, the city and its behavior. By coinciding with international authors (Jorgensen, 2003) and regional specialists (Wong-González, 2009), the Latin American case is understood here as an area of opportunity that can only be understood and addressed if the structural levels are studied as a whole; namely, that of nature, the community and the individual. Contemporary research indicates that Sonora, with more than 16% of the migrant population, suffers from the effects of an accelerated growth in fields of global tourism activity, which nonetheless generates economic benefits, this does not translate into an ecological conscience or the acquisition of competitive advantages for the average citizen (Enríquez, 2008). Problems such as the critical shortage of water, the growth of cities, the pollution of soil and air, the depredation of natural resources and the ecological, social and economic consequences of climate change characterize the Sonoran environment more and more. Research in this LGAC addresses these problems from the perspective of sustainable lifestyles and the design of environments (Corral, 2010). Public policies in turn problematize security, legislation and public service. As has been suggested (Bañón, 2003), issues such as violence, governance and employment demand research capable of informing decision-makers about the guidelines to follow in order to face socially sensitive and immediate problems. Scientific research and the applicability of their data are determinant here, in a regional context characterized by volatile migration, gender crimes and uneven growth of the economy, which leads to exclusion (Denman, 2001).

How to enter this postgraduate course?

Entry requirements

  • Hold a master's degree in Social Sciences or related. The period for presenting the original title will not exceed two months from the start date of the doctorate courses.
  • To have passed with an average no less than 80 the subjects of the study plan of the masters.
  • To prove an English exam equivalent to TOEFL with a minimum of 500 points.
  • Present and accredit the entrance examination to the postgraduate course of CENEVAL, EXANI-III, covering the minimum percentage established by the Academic Committee of the Postgraduate Course.
  • Conduct and approve an interview with the Academic Selection-Income Commission.
  • Present a general interdisciplinary research proposal in one of the lines that make up the Doctoral Program in Social Sciences.
  • To have authorship or co-authorship in at least two scientific publications in indexed Research Journals or in book chapters in prestigious editorials.
  • Fill the application for admission to the Doctoral Program in Social Sciences. The application is available online on the graduate's website ( ). The application must indicate the line of investigation you wish to join (submit the printed application along with the other documents).

Admission profile

Applicants must have a master's degree in any discipline of the Social Sciences or related. They must dedicate full time with a professional commitment to attend the activities that the postgraduate requires them. Preference will be given to applicants who accredit experience in research work in any of the academic areas related to the doctorate. Likewise, it will be considered as a requisite of income that the subject of investigation responds to the local, regional or national social problems, without implying the exclusion of projects with international impact, since it is based on a systemic and global vision that recognizes the interaction in a double sense that has the local and the global. Qualification requirements

To obtain a PhD degree, you must:

  • Approve the total credits and meet the other requirements established in the corresponding graduate program;
  • Proof of understanding a language other than Spanish, as established by the Academic Committee of the Postgraduate Program according to the study program.
  • Pass the examination of grade in the written phase and in the oral phase before a jury named ex profeso.
  • For the degree of doctor, to pass a general examination of knowledge in the case in which the graduate program contemplates it.
  • Comply with the provisions and requirements demanded by the School Services Office for the issuance of the degree.

Titration options

To pass the examination of degree in the written and oral phase, in the terms indicated in articles 61 and 62 of the Regulation of Postgraduate Studies of the Universidad de Sonora . Registration and tuition fees

Students, when enrolling in any of the graduate programs, must cover the corresponding fees according to the current minimum wage in the city of Hermosillo, as established in the Quotas Regulation.

Infrastructure fees

45 DSMM (This item of cost and its half-yearly amount is in the process of being authorized by the General Treasury of the Universidad de Sonora ).

Important: Program Coordination may apply to applicants accepted for a national CONACYT scholarship, as long as they meet the requirements of the current call. The number of scholarships that will be assigned will be subject to the budgetary availability of CONACYT. The order of priority will be determined based on the hierarchy resulting from the average score of the admission process.
