The GSSI is an international Ph.D. school and a center for research and higher education. The Ph.D. program for the academic year 2021-2022 includes four courses:

Students from all scientific areas are selected according to the highest international standards prevailing in the best graduate schools worldwide. The GSSI is located in L'Aquila city center. It provides students with a 4-year Ph.D. scholarship and free housing.
The main aim of the curriculum in Astroparticle Physics is to provide the entrance points and the scientific and cultural tools to participate successfully in the researches in particle physics, nuclear physics and astrophysics, high energy astrophysics, gravitation, and cosmology. Special attention will be given to experimental and phenomenological aspects. Moreover, the Ph.D. student in Astroparticle Physics at GSSI will have a special opportunity to follow and participate in the research conducted at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories (LNGS), with its wide community of scientists from all over the world.
The Astroparticle Physics curriculum consists of 4 years of study and research. The first year a wide choice of courses will cover a large spectrum of topics and the year will be concluded by a final exam. Students will work on a research project under the supervision of one or more teachers and scientists of the GSSI, of the INFN Gran Sasso National Laboratory, and/or of the professors of the University of L'Aquila. Interdisciplinary approaches to the studies and research, exchanges of ideas and innovations are strongly encouraged.
Astroparticle Physics (8 scholarships)
1 scholarship funded by Thales Alenia Space for the following research project: “Development of cryogenic sensors of quantum coherence
for use in Quantum Technologies”. The selected candidate will work on the funded research project under the supervision of two advisors: Dr. Laura Cardani, INFN, external; Prof. Fernando Ferroni, GSSI, internal.
It is possible to apply both for Thales Alenia Space Project and for GSSI scholarships, by submitting two different applications.
The research and Ph.D. in physics at the GSSI is focused on astroparticle physics. Astroparticle physics is an interdisciplinary and young research field, grown at the intersection of particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, and cosmology. It addresses some of the most pressing and fundamental questions in science today: the origin and the evolution of our universe, the nature of dark matter and dark energy, the study of neutrinos and of the ultimate constituents of matter, the search for gravitational waves, the investigation and explanation of the cosmic rays.
Mathematics In natural, Social and Life Sciences
The Ph.D. curriculum in Mathematics in Natural, Social and Life Sciences at Gran Sasso Science Institute will lead the students to deal not only with the more traditional aspects of this discipline, such as Pure Mathematics, Partial Differential Equations, and Mathematical Physics but also with entirely new problems, requiring the development of the most appropriate tools to deal with the complexity, such as stochastic analysis and computational mathematics.
The curriculum consists of 4 years of study and research. During the first year, after initial training classes, students will be offered four main courses and a wide number of short courses, covering a large spectrum of topics. By the beginning of the second year, students select a research project under the supervision of one (or more) of the mathematicians affiliated to GSSI.
Mathematics in Natural, Social and Life Sciences (7 scholarships)
Within the Ph.D. course in Mathematics in Natural, Social, and Life Sciences a priority has been established on mathematical modeling, both towards the traditional areas of application, such as Physics or Engineering, and towards emerging issues in Biology and Social Sciences. An emphasis will be given also to partial differential equations and their applications, in particular, mathematical models in fluid dynamics and in the study of nonlinear waves; statistical mechanics, hydrodynamic limits and derivation of effective equations in classical and quantum mechanics, phase transitions, disordered systems; methods of statistical physics in data science; numerical linear algebra and its applications, numerical methods for differential equations, high-performance computational techniques; network analysis problems; continuum mechanics,
fluid dynamics models for cardiovascular circulation, computational fluid dynamics; mathematical models in biology and social sciences.
The principled development of modern computing systems involves the modeling and management of the interactions between discrete and continuous phenomena, coping with heterogeneous networks efficiently and sustainably, the possibility to access potentially unlimited hardware and software resources, handling of uncertainty, and the need to elaborate in real-time massive amounts of data. It is our tenet that meeting these challenges requires one to develop a multidisciplinary knowledge that must be founded on firm modeling and reasoning capabilities. Therefore, the main aim of our Ph.D. studies is to provide students with the opportunity to develop those capabilities and to apply them to research challenges in Computer Science. To this end, we offer our graduate students introductory courses that provide the necessary formal background and specialized courses that introduce students to the newest developments in the areas of Reactive Systems, Software Engineering, and Algorithmic Aspects of Computer and Social Networks.
The Ph.D. program consists of 4 years of study and research. During the first year, students follow a number of courses structured in three main pillars: Foundations of (Modern) Networks, Specification and Analysis of Concurrent Reactive Systems, and Software Systems and Services. Apart from internal GSSI courses, students are encouraged to take classes also at summer schools or at other institutions in Italy or abroad. Each student is asked to prepare, together with the Ph.D. coordinator, a study plan to be approved by the Scientific Board.
Computer Science (8 scholarships)
1 scholarship funded by Thales Alenia Space for the following research project: “Computational aspects of quantum non-locality”. The selected candidate will work on the funded research project under the supervision of two advisors: Prof. Fabio Sciarrino, University of Rome “La Sapienza”, external; Prof. Michele Flammini, GSSI, internal.
The Ph.D. Program in Computer Science of the GSSI aims to provide students with the main results, theories, techniques, and methodologies regarding algorithms, models, languages, software, and services to cope successfully with the challenges of the present and future Information and Communication Technology.
Regional Science and Economic Geography
The Ph.D. Program in “Regional Science and Economic Geography” is a unique multidisciplinary program in regional and local development, meant to train and make students capable of pursuing autonomous, high-level, original research that contributes to the promotion of individual and societal wellbeing. The program equips graduates with skills that can be used to carry out research both within and outside academia.
We welcome students with different backgrounds, including (albeit not limited to) applied economics, economic geography, and sociology, who share an interest in regional and local development issues. The research themes of the Ph.D. program build upon the Research Tracks and expertise of the GSSI Area of Social Sciences: i) Inner Areas and Peripheral Development; ii) Disasters and Regional Resilience; iii) Human Capital, Migration and Local Labour Markets; iii) Culture, Tourism, and Regional Urban Development; iv) Business, Innovation and Environmental Sustainability Within and Across Regions; v) Regional Policy Evaluation and Local Governance.
Regional Science and Economic Geography (8 scholarships)
1 scholarship funded through the NWO VENI project “Productivity and resilience: Synergies and trade-offs”, for the following profile:
“Increasing long-term productivity while simultaneously promoting more sustainable and resilient development pathways is a grand challenge for advanced economies nowadays. Identifying the overlapping area between productivity and resilience is key to defy the dichotomy between the two, which instead leads to believe that interventions and measures for productivity harm resilience and that resilience-oriented programs are unproductive.” The selected candidate’s activity will concern the review of the existing literature, data collection, quantitative analysis, and implications of economic policy.
The aim of the Ph.D. in Regional Science and Economic Geography is to address issues related to local and regional development. The methodological perspective of research and teaching is multidisciplinary, combining regional and urban economics, economic and human geography, spatial planning, and sociology.

The official language of the Ph.D. programs is English. The fellowships are awarded for 4 years and their yearly amount is €16,159.91 gross. An additional 50% on a monthly basis may be awarded for the research period abroad if approved by the GSSI.
