Introduction

The Programme Doctoral Degree in Advanced English Studies: Linguistics, Literature and Culture Is an interuniversity degree in which the three Galician universities participate (University of Coruña, University of Santiago de Compostela and University of Vigo) and that it is born from previous programs with diverse official recognitions (Mention of Quality and Recognition towards Excellence). It was positively evaluated and accredited by the MEC (5600811, dated 07/22/2013), by the ACSUG (Axencia for Quality of the University System of Galicia) and by the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA) For higher education. The program forms researchers in various fields within English studies, from literature and cultural studies to linguistics.

It includes research on the different levels of the English language (phonetics and phonology, lexicon, morphosyntax, semantics), as well as the synchronic and diachronic perspectives, and methodological approaches related to corpus linguistics and psycholinguistics.
  • Studies of Literature and North American Culture. Research within the field of American literature and culture, including literary and cultural studies.
  • Linguistics Applied to the translation and teaching of English. Includes research on English Linguistics applied to Translation and teaching and learning English.
  • Discourse studies in English. Research in the field of textual linguistics, pragmatics and discourse.
  • Irish literature and culture. Research in Irish literature, culture and history, and study of sociocultural relations between Ireland and Galicia.

Specific Training Complements

In case the doctor does not have the complete previous training required in the program, his / her admission to the program may be conditioned to the surpassing of specific training complements, which may be subjects or modules of master and degree. The complements assigned to the same doctorate may not exceed 15 ECTS credits and may be made prior or simultaneous to the tuition in academic tuition in the program.

In case of simultaneous realization the students will have to register for these complements at the moment of formalizing the tuition of academic tutelage in the program, which must be surpassed in the maximum term of three consecutive quarters. Failure to do so will result in student disqualification from the program.

Professional and academic outputs

This program is aimed at all those who want to obtain the skills and abilities of the research activity in the field of English studies, having as a horizon their collaboration and work in research centers and in the universities themselves.

The program will serve, in a word, to culminate the period of research training of future academic and university professors, both in Spain and abroad.

The program presented follows the objectives set out in the Dublin Descriptors at the postgraduate level as it will facilitate advanced knowledge in current trends in the various fields of English studies (English Linguistics, literature and culture) , As well as providing the students with the capacity and mastery of the skills and research methods of each of them.

The program will also allow students to develop communicative skills with other members of the academic community, conduct and defend research papers in a critical, rigorous, original and academic way.

Finally, in agreement with the Dublin Descriptors, students will be familiar with the use of new applied technologies, for example, research in general and, in particular, corpus linguistics and computer science, the use of large databases Linguistic and literary, machine translation, statistical techniques, new technologies applied to the teaching of languages ​​and literatures, etc.

Admission Profile Recommended

  1. Have an official Spanish degree and a Master's degree or equivalent in the areas of Philology, Translation and Interpretation, Humanities, Communication, Social Sciences and Sociology, Political Science, Early Childhood Education, Primary, Social Education and Pedagogy, History and Philosophy.
  2. Hold a Diploma in Advanced Studies (DEA) or Research Sufficiency in English Studies / English Philology or similar.
  3. Students in any of the following assumptions that meet the specific requirements of these studies:
  • Hold an official university degree in a member country of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) that allows him to be admitted to a Master, at least 300 ECTS credits among all completed official studies, of which at least 60 must be level Of master's degree.
<li>     Graduates and holders of an official Spanish degree of at least 300 ECTS credits. These graduates must complete the training supplements required by the program unless their qualifications include research training credits.</li> 
<li>     Hold a foreign degree without the need for official homologation, once the University verifies that a level of education equivalent to that of an official Spanish master is accredited and that entitles the holder to access doctoral studies in the country of issue. This admission does not imply the recognition of this degree more than for the effects of admission to the doctoral program.</li> 
<li>     Be in possession of another title of Spanish doctor that has been obtained under previous university regulations.</li>

Students who have begun their doctoral studies in programs regulated by previous university regulations can access doctoral studies if they meet the general requirements for this or have a degree or qualification with 300 ECTS credits, at least 60 of which have to Be of masters level.
