The Economics Ph.D. program at ITAM was created with the intention of contributing to Mexico and Latin America's academic and economic development through the promotion of economic research and the training of highly qualified economists. The Program is part of ITAM's continuing commitment to the scientific and cultural development of the region.
ITAM has a long and successful experience training economists at the undergraduate and master's level. ITAM is also one of the region´s foremost research institutions in the field of economics, as shown by the number and quality of publications by our economics faculty and by the organization in recent years of a number of important academic events. For both reasons, we are in an excellent position to build a first-class doctoral program.
ITAM´s Ph.D. Program in Economics is intended to attract students with clear academic interests who, for different reasons, prefer to carry out their doctoral studies in Latin America. The Program is geared toward developing the research skills of the students and acquainting them with problems of interest for the region.
We expect graduates in our Program to be in an ideal position to join the different teaching and research institutions in Latin America, as well as research groups in business and the government.
The estimated completion time for the Ph.D. Program in Economics at ITAM is five years. The Program has three phases:
Phase I consists of three semesters devoted to the basic courses in economic theory, mathematical analysis, and econometrics, followed by general examinations in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics. Approving these exams confers the student the degree of Maestro en Teoría Económica. Approving the exams with an outstanding grade is a requirement for advancing to the next phase of the Program.
Phase II consists of a year devoted to field courses. These courses can be taken either at ITAM or within the framework of the Programa Doctoral Latinoamericano (Latin American Doctorate Program), which is a joint effort between the Universidad de Chile, the Universidad Torcuato Di Tella (Argentina) and ITAM. The Programa Doctoral Latinoamericano requires students to visit each of the participating institutions for three months.
Phase III corresponds to dissertation research. It is expected to take approximately two years.
The Program aims to train economists who will go to leadership research positions in Mexico and Latin America. We hope that our graduates will take up posts in economic research centers of universities and other institutions in the region.
