Program Description

Within the field of transport systems and technology, there is also a Ph.D. study where students deal with a wide range of topics covering a wide range of transport topics, ranging from models for assessing the efficiency of public transport systems to transport safety issues, road, rail, and public transport, to the environmental impact assessment of transport. During their dissertation, the students become acquainted with the latest knowledge in the given field in the Czech Republic and abroad, as well as with the scientific methods, which they then apply in their work.

Technology and Management in Transportation and Telecommunications

The Doctoral study field “Technology and Management in Transportation and Telecommunications” is based on the Master’s study field “Logistics and Transport Processes Control” and its three building blocks - logistics, the technology of transportation, and transportation theory. The field further expands and deepens knowledge in these three fields while reflecting the current state of research. In order to train the student to do his or her own research, the field offers mandatory courses on advanced mathematical statistics, applied graph theory, operations research, modeling of logistics processes as well as on the economy of transportation and telecommunications. Besides these mandatory courses, the student chooses elective courses focused on, among other topics, on transportation processes management, decision support systems, transportation systems, or project management. The ability to engage in independent research under the leadership of a supervisor is a key element of the field. The student must present his or her research outcomes in international scientific journals and at international scientific conferences. Full-time students are expected to spend at least one semester abroad at one of the partner institutions and to gain teaching experience in courses taught at the department.

The graduates have the knowledge to follow and analyze state-of-the-art research in the field of logistics, the technology of transportation, and transportation theory as well as to conduct independent research including presentation of its outcomes to the international scientific community at international scientific conferences and in scientific journals. The graduates learn the basics of research methodology and gained experience in teaching courses on the university level. During his or her studies the graduates use the opportunity to study abroad, explore the international scientific environments, strengthen language skills, and to create the first international contacts. The graduate can seek employment as an academic staff at institutions in the transportation specialization in his or her home country or abroad, as a member of research teams in research-focused institutions, or as a leading analyst or expert in the private or public sector - for example in large freight forwarding (expedition) and logistics companies, organizers of integrated transport systems, transport companies, carriers with any kind of transport, in IT companies which support network fields; Ministry of Transport, regional authorities, the EU institutions, and international organizations operating in transport (ERA, CER, UIC, etc.).

Transportation Systems and Technology

The basic characteristic of doctoral studies in the field of Transportation Systems and Technology is linked with industry with the possibility to modify the optional part of the study block to further narrow the field of specialization. The doctoral study program is aimed at scientific research and independent creative work of Ph.D. students, especially in the following areas - Intelligent Transport Systems, safety, and reliability of transport systems, components and systems of vehicles, development of transport telematics, transport systems in the city and in the countryside, environmental impacts, human mobility in non-urban areas, design of transport infrastructure and applied mechanics and modeling in transportation. The field of study is oriented on the opportunity of students to deepen their theoretical knowledge for their specific scientific work to solve research tasks under supervision. Students are trained to deal with complex analytical and decision-making processes in the field of transport systems and technology at the current level of knowledge.

A graduate of the doctoral program has deep theoretical knowledge in transport and demonstrates an understanding of scientific disciplines in transport and at the frontier of other fields. The graduate has a comprehensive and systematic knowledge of traffic theory, mathematics and mathematical modeling, statistics, physics and mechanics, operations research methods, and information technology necessary to manage and innovate transport services. He or she has a deep knowledge of the realization of transport infrastructure and procedural information systems in transport. A graduate will find employment in the creative solution to the problems of transport systems and techniques at scientific research and development centers and departments of universities. He or she can be employed as a top expert for solving complex transportation and land-use planning work and the organization of integrated transport systems, in designing institutions and in government, in senior professional positions to address issues of transportation systems as well as in management positions in industrial companies. He or she is able to develop basic or applied research at technical universities, research organizations, and institutes of the Academy of Sciences as well as at foreign research institutions.

Air Traffic Control and Management

The doctoral study program "Technology in Transportation and Telecommunications" in the study field "Air Traffic Control and Management" follows to the accredited 2-year Master's degree program "N3710 - Technology in Transportation and Telecommunications", especially in the study field of "Air Traffic Control and Management". The basic characteristic of doctoral studies in the field "Air Traffic Control and Management" is a continuity of Master’s program with the possibility to modify the optional part of the study block narrower specialization. The doctoral study program is aimed at scientific research and independent creative work of Ph.D. students, especially in the following areas - the development of air transport systems on the principles of sustainable mobility, European air transport policy, development of methods to assess the usability of air traffic systems, development of modern logistics systems, modeling of technological processes and development of communication, navigation and surveillance systems. It is oriented to the opportunity to deepen theoretical knowledge of students for their specific scientific work in solving research tasks under supervision. Students are trained to deal with complex analytical and decision-making processes in the field of technology and management in air transport and telecommunications at the current level of knowledge.

Graduates obtain deepened knowledge of applied mathematics, economics, transport, decision theory, marketing, and strategic management, supplemented with special knowledge of the theory of transport, transport technology, and modern logistics systems. Within the study, students also create a narrower specialization by the study of specialized subjects such as Air Traffic Management, aerodynamics, and mechanics of flight, management and economics of air transport, instrument systems, navigation, aircraft construction, construction of propulsion systems, ecology, and the environment in aviation, human factors in aviation, advanced CNS systems (communication, navigation, surveillance), modern trends in airport development, electronics, quality in civil aviation, European approach to aircraft maintenance and flight control systems. Graduates will find employment in management functions in the aviation domain, research centers, and universities workplaces. Employment can be also found as an economist in air transport, in design organizations, or in the state administration to solve large, complex problems of technology and air traffic management.

Transportation Logistics

Basic characteristics of doctoral study in the branch “Transportation Logistics” is a branch continuity with a possibility to complete narrower expert specialization in position and function of transportation in logistics in obligatory and optional parts of the study block - controlling and optimization of transfer of objects and costs among nodes in the transportation network, connected movements of means of transport, activities in nodes of transportation network including of management of stock holding at the begin, in the end, and during the transportation process or during transport of nodes which is made by transporters. The doctoral study branch is dedicated to scientific research and self-contained creative activity of doctoral students, especially in these areas - management of circulatory processes, effect of transportation as a principal phenomenon of intensification of material and immaterial flows in logistics chains, importance, and organization of information flows in control of logistic chains, their use for multi-criteria optimization of costs and size of transportation flows, logistic technologies based on distribution processes and optimal information flows (substitution of material flow with a flow of purpose-built structured information), quality of transport as a decisive factor of offer of transportation services in logistic chains include offer of multimodal transportation systems, forecasts of development of logistics systems in evolution of market connections and conditions of implementation of logistic technologies in market conditions, making of models for optimal control of complicated logistics chains and networks, proposal of parameters of the most convenient means of transport and systems without regards to a possibility of realizations (a vision of transport in future). The doctoral study branch is oriented so that the student has a possibility to deepen his theoretical knowledge for his particular scientific work within the solution of research assignments under the supervisor’s leading. Students have been prepared for the solution of complicated analytical, decisive, and implementation processes in the area of effect of transportation to logistics systems not only at the level of contemporary knowledge but also visions in the near and farther future.

The absolved gets deepened knowledge in applied mathematics and transportation logistics, enlarged with special knowledge in transport theory, transport technology, and modern logistics systems within the study program framework. Within the study branch, the student completes his narrower expert specialization with help of branch subjects study, for example, modeling of logistic chains, combined transportation, continual transportation, airborne transportation in logistics, telematics systems, information systems and technologies, transportation systems, and infrastructure, transportation solutions in territorial planning, manipulation and stock holding systems, automatization of transportation technologies. The absolvent is being prepared for the solution of research-developing problems in the area of logistics. Absolvents will be investigators of research and developing projects for the everlasting improvement of controlling mechanisms in logistics. The immediate connection of logistics to the economy and living environment prepares the absolvents to be creators and propagators of innovative approaches of logistic solutions in all areas of human activity. The absolvent will be a specialist for research and development of new approaches for modeling logistic problems in controlling the work of companies and business organizations, where one of the most important activities is the provision, transportation, and marketing. The study includes methods of simulations without regard to transportation distances from the shortest to the longest and without regard to transportation times also from the shortest to the longest. The absolved will be prepared for the consistent usage of multi-criteria optimization methods using methods of artificial intelligence. Their research and development will be one of the most important parts of this study. The absolved finds his use in the creative solutions of problems of positions and functions of transportation in logistics systems at the research and developing department of universities. He finds his use also as a highly-qualified consultant on projecting and implementation of transportation and logistic systems for consulting and projecting companies.

Engineering Informatics of Transportation and Communication

The Ph.D. study program “Engineering Informatics of Transportation and Communication” contains disciplines as information and communication technology (ICT) applied in transport and logistics. The program involves the utilization of innovations in microelectronics, computing (hardware and software), in telecommunications and optoelectronics, microprocessors, fiber optics, and innovative and new solutions for road and rail transport, similarly as for air and water transport. These innovations enable the processing and storage of enormous amounts of transport data and information. The strong role-plays a rapid distribution of information through communication networks for traffic control technologies having strong meaning in the safety and security of transport in all its modes. Information and communications technology are studied as the support of the complex systems, transmitting and processing information and commands among the various parts of transport and logistic networks. It can be considered as the basis of intelligent transport systems.

Graduates will be able to take part in solutions to scientific and innovative tasks in the field of intelligent transport systems (ITS), cooperate in the research works having a deep knowledge of theoretical instruments in informatics, telecommunications, system logistics, and transport and traffic control.


Due to the ongoing accreditation procedure for other study programs, only this study program is currently available for admission. In the case of accreditation and opening of other study programs such as Logistics and Transport Processes Control, Intelligent Transport Systems, Air Traffic Control and Management, and Smart Cities), the accepted candidate will be allowed to continue their studies in the selected study program.

The admission procedure will take place on 26th February 2020 from 9:00 am at the CTU Faculty of Transportation Sciences, Konviktská 20, Praha 1. A written test will take place at 9 am and an interview will follow from 1 pm.

Deadline for submission of applications: until 14th February 2020 to the Division of Science and Research, Konviktská 20, Praha 1, Room No. 313.
