Program Description

Research overview

The Geospatial Systems CDT will deliver a world-leading generation of engineers, scientists and practitioners trained in geospatial data science and its application within interdisciplinary PhD research on:

  • smart cities
  • urban and infrastructure resilience
  • spatial mobility (transport)
  • energy systems
  • sustainable spatial planning
  • structural monitoring
  • social inclusion and healthy living
  • environmental applications
  • the translation of geospatial methods to global challenges

When studying with the CDT, you will undertake a four year PhD. In year one, you will study towards an MRes in Geospatial Data Science. You will gain specialist joint training in:

  • spatial data capture
  • management
  • analysis
  • statistics
  • modelling
  • visualisation

Entry requirements

All candidates are considered on an individual basis and we accept a broad range of qualifications. The entrance requirements below apply to 2021 entry.

Home / UK students

  • Undergraduate degree: Minimum of a 2:1 degree in Engineering, Geographical Sciences, Computing or Mathematics or related disciplines.
  • Additional information: We encourage you to get in touch with a member of academic staff about your research proposal before submitting an application. They may be able to help you with your proposal and offer support to find funding opportunities in your area.

EU / International students

  • Undergraduate degree: Minimum of a 2:1 degree in Engineering, Geographical Sciences, Computing or Mathematics or related disciplines.
  • International and EU equivalents: We accept a wide range of qualifications from all over the world.
  • Additional information: We encourage you to get in touch with a member of academic staff about your research proposal before submitting an application. They may be able to help you with your proposal and offer support to find funding opportunities in your area.
  • IELTS:  6.0 (no less than 5.5 in each element)
  • English language requirementsAs well as IELTS (listed above), we also accept other English language qualifications. This includes TOEFL iBT, Pearson PTE, GCSE, IB and O level English.

English language support

If you need support to meet the required level, you may be able to attend a presessional course. Our Centre for English Language Education is accredited by the British Council for the teaching of English in the UK.

For presessional English courses, you must take IELTS for UKVI to meet visa regulations.

If you successfully complete your presessional course to the required level, you can then progress to your degree course. This means that you won't need to retake IELTS or equivalent.

Important documents

As part of an application you are required to attach:

  • A covering letter which includes a 500-word statement on why you are interested in applying to study geospatial data science, and how your interests and experience relate to the CDT.
  • A CV
  • Officially Certified Degree transcripts and certificates
  • If English is not your first language, a copy of your English language qualifications
  • Signed copies of your references on letter headed paper (these can be in PDF format)

The CDT four year (1+3) training programme has been created by our team of world-leading geospatial scientists, informed by our industry partners, and is delivered at the state of the art facilities at Newcastle University and the University of Nottingham. Upon completion of training with the CDT, students will develop technical skills and industry-focused knowledge that can be applied to;
