Although the Department of Physics at National Chung Hsing University, founded in 1987, is very young in comparison to other physics departments in Taiwan, it has a long-upheld tradition of pursuing excellence both in teaching and research that dates back to its days as the Physics Division in the Department of Applied Mathematics. Today, the Department has established itself as the best and most important physics department in central Taiwan.

With twenty-five full-time professors and two teaching assistants devoting themselves to teaching a broad range of physics from advanced to fundamental to highly interdisciplinary, the department offers NCHU's students as well as students from nearby universities and schools invaluable learning opportunities. 

More than 90 graduate students and 240 undergraduate students are enrolled in the department. Under the tutelage of the faculty, they are led to the forefront of contemporary physics. Research at the Department of Physics explores nearly all representative frontiers of physics, including nanoscale structures and devices, novel magnetic and superconducting materials, quantum computation, thin-film devices, scanning probe microscopy, statistical mechanics of biomolecules and biomembranes, novel amorphous materials, single electronics, biophysics, and evolution of bacterial circadian rhythms, and atomic physics. Armed with state-of-the-art facilities, an excellent physics library, and close collaboration with outstanding faculty members in the Schools of Engineering and Life Sciences, the department's faculty, and students continue to make frequent exciting progress.

Degree Requirement

The Department of Physics offers bachelor, master, and Ph.D. degrees. The Ph.D. degree program is instructed in English. International students are expected to have a good command of English to attend the Ph.D. degree programs. Ph.D. students are required to have 30 course credits and two papers published in international journals (SCI papers) before applying for the dissertation defense. It takes an average of 4 to 5 years to obtain a Ph.D. degree in our department. 

Most Ph.D. students receive scholarships from NCHU and research assistantship from the research funding of their advisors. Within the first two-year period, the student must pass the Ph.D. qualification examination to become a Ph.D. candidate. Students who have completed their Ph.D. program have a good chance of working as a postdoc for one or two years in our department or other institutions in Taiwan. For the master's degree program, students are also required to earn 30 course credits (including 6 credits for master thesis). There is an oral examination for the master thesis.


We are looking for talented, highly motivated, and hardworking Ph.D. students to join our family (Institute of Physics or Institute of NanoScience, National Chung Hsing University).

Typically, our Ph.D. students receive a stipend of 10,000-14,000 NT every month. Moreover, successful applicants will also receive attractive compensation and benefit packages provided by NCHU.
