Analytical chemistry is a branch of natural science and is based not only on all the chemical disciplines but also on physics, biology, the theory of information and a number of technical disciplines. It provides information on the identity, structure, and amounts of components in natural and man-made objects and on their distribution in space and time. It cooperates with other fields of natural science in seeking relationships between the chemical composition of substances and their properties. It is an applied multidisciplinary science with a number of feedbacks that accents teamwork in the solution of problems. It requires mastering of sufficient background in a number of disciplines, such as general and physical chemistry, physics, mathematics, inorganic and organic chemistry and biochemistry, and, of course, a thorough knowledge of the theory of analytical chemistry and of modern instrumental analytical methods. In view of the experimental character of analytical chemistry, an important role is played by practical capabilities and manual skills.


Description of verification and evaluation criteria

The entrance exam is a one-round in the form of an interview. Based on a written request submitted electronically together with the application but no later than by 19 May 2019, the Dean may permit the entrance examination to take place via information and communication technology, but only for serious and documented reasons such as health or study abroad.

During the entrance examination, the candidate must demonstrate the technical and linguistic skills to study the given program, along with attributes necessary for scientific work. The examination is graded with a maximum of 100 points, of which 30 points are awarded as a bonus for giving a more specific idea of the study content and planned dissertation work in the voluntary application appendix, including the dissertation topic, a brief annotation, the anticipated supervising department and the consent of a specific supervisor to supervise such doctoral project.

Admission to Doctoral studies is conditioned by successful completion of a Master's study program.

Rules governing exemption from entrance examination

The entrance exam may be waived based on a written request from the candidate, provided they have successfully applied for a STARS project in the given academic year. Such a request, along with documentation that the conditions have been met, must be submitted (but not electronically) by 19 May 2019.

A graduate of the Ph.D. study program in analytical chemistry has gained advanced theoretical and practical knowledge and experience in a wide field of chemical and instrumental methods of analysis, chemometry, approaches to the attainment of a high quality of analytical results, procedures of method validation and accreditation of analytical laboratories. They can utilize this background in a great variety of jobs dealing with the development, optimization, and verification of new analytical procedures, organization, and supervision of analytical practices necessary for scientific research, for industry and agriculture, environmental protection, medicine, etc., in research institutions in the industry and in various regulatory laboratories. They also can teach analytical chemistry in schools and specialized courses.
