Chemistry of the Life Processes

Students entering this Program are trained in all fields of Biochemistry including bioenergetics, enzymology, molecular biology, protein chemistry and structure, immunochemistry, xenobiochemistry (biochemistry of foreign substances), chemical and cellular fundaments of the metabolic reactions etc. Students participating in the Program are actively involved in grant-supported research projects at the Department of Biochemistry of the Faculty of Science of Charles University Prague as well as in the collaborating laboratories at the Academy of Sciences of Czech Republic, and in regional and company laboratories. The studies in the Program are successfully completed after obtaining the English Language Certificate (issued by independent organizations), and after passing the State Doctoral Examination in biochemistry and two other subjects (usually suggested by the supervisor), and the defense of the PhD Thesis the important part of which is at least one publication in international peer-reviewed journal at which the candidate must be the principal author.

Description of verification and evaluation criteria

The entrance exam is a one-round in the form of an interview. Based on a written request submitted electronically together with the application but no later than by 19 May 2019, the Dean may permit the entrance examination to take place via information and communication technology, but only for serious and documented reasons such as health or study abroad.

During the entrance examination, the candidate must demonstrate the technical and linguistic skills to study the given program, along with attributes necessary for scientific work. The examination is graded with a maximum of 100 points, of which 20 points are awarded as a bonus for giving a more specific idea of the study content and planned dissertation work in the voluntary application appendix, including the dissertation topic, a brief annotation, the anticipated supervising department and the consent of a specific supervisor to supervise such doctoral project.

Such a request, along with documentation that the conditions have been met, must be submitted (but not electronically) by 19 May 2019.

Career Prospect

A graduate of the Ph.D. doctoral program in Biochemistry is expected to have broad theoretical and practical knowledge in biochemistry and molecular biology. In their particular field, he/she is able to produce and present scientific results at the international level. His/her education and knowledge is broad enough to be able to adapt to work in all research directions at various institutions dealing with studies not only in biochemistry and molecular biology but also with broader subjects at the chemistry: biology interface. He/she is able to participate in theoretical and practical training courses at Universities but is also able to lead research groups and clinical chemistry laboratories in medical establishments, as well as participate in specialized research in the pharmaceutical industry.
