The subjects applied specific molecular approaches in the detailed exploration of the heredity and variability of organisms the uncovering of the structural and functional relations between information macromolecules (nucleic acids and proteins) as the basis of the existence and manifestation/expression of living matter at all levels of complexity of its organization. It is concerned with the structure and function of genes, the biosynthesis of proteins as gene products – gene expression and its regulation.
Classical and molecular biological approaches are applied to all biological objects in normal and pathological states with the aim of discovering, understanding and purposefully modifying the mechanisms of all their manifestations, including the viral level and gene therapy. Their subject of study and methods mean that these disciplines have an impact on practically all the scientific and research fields of biology and biomedicine and have an influence on the applied spheres of medicine (congenital and infectious diseases, vaccines, new drugs), agriculture (transgenic organisms and the improvement plants and animals), ecology (the relationship between organisms and the environment, control of pollution of the environment and non-traditional processing of wastes) and biotechnologies based primarily on the procedures of genetic engineering and genetic manipulation.
Description of verification and evaluation criteria
The entrance exam is a one round and consists of more parts in form of presentations, interviews, and discussions based on written preparation (tasks given by the committee). The applicants present their results from their master studies. The whole entrance exam takes place in one day.
Based on a written request submitted electronically together with the application but no later than by 19 May 2019, the Dean may permit the entrance examination to take place via information and communication technology, but only for serious and documented reasons such as health or study abroad.
During the entrance examination, the candidate must demonstrate the technical and linguistic skills to study the given program, along with attributes necessary for scientific work. The examination is graded with a maximum of 100 points.
The list of topics and supervisors who offer projects to applicants in the academic year 2019/2020 is published on the website of the Department of Cell Biology after March 1st, 2019 (https://www.natur.cuni.cz/biologie/bunecna-biologie/studium). We recommend the students to contact their supervisors in advance and discuss the possibilities and requirements of different projects offered.

Rules governing exemption from entrance examination
The entrance exam may be waived based on a written request from the candidate, provided they have successfully applied for a STARS project in the given academic year. Such a request, along with documentation that the conditions have been met, must be submitted (but not electronically) by 19 May 2019.
A graduate of the Developmental biology study program meets the requirements for a qualified researcher. They possess theoretical and practical knowledge, plus experience in a wide range of biological disciplines (molecular and cellular biology, embryology and developmental biology, reproductive biology). He/she is trained to carry out fundamental and applied research into cell structures, organismal reproduction, and development, morphogenesis, the molecular basis of cellular regulation, proliferation and differentiation, and intercellular relations in multicellular systems throughout the entire life cycle of an organism. Graduates will be useful in basic scientific research, biotechnology, and applied research and practice (health, agriculture, biotechnology), as well as in the training of new generations of researchers.
