Entrance examination: single round – oral interview

Assessment of the applicant’s previous studies, research, and other academic activities: 0–15 points
Assessment of the applicant’s knowledge of secondary literature: 0–15 points
Recommended dissertation topics:
The structure and functioning of language (languages) from both the synchronic and diachronic perspectives.The dissertation proposal must be prepared in adequate detail, and the recommended length is 3,000 to 4,000 words, including bibliography and references.Applicants should contact the Chair of the Subject Area Board and the potential supervisor sufficiently in advance prior to submitting the application to consult the topic for the dissertation proposal. An applicant can only be admitted if they are awarded a minimum of 30 points in the entrance examination and, at the same time, score enough points to place among the expected number of students admitted to the respective program of study; admissions will be granted to all applicants who score the same number of points as the applicant who comes in the last place in the ranking of admissions. Please note that different expected numbers of admissions apply to full-time and combined forms of study. Applicants cannot be admitted without submitting evidence of their prior education no later than on the enrolment day.

Admission to Doctoral studies is conditioned by successful completion of a Master's study program.

Information about graduate employment
The General Linguistics Ph.D. graduate is able to analyze in detail the variable and constant elements of language structure and function, both synchronically and diachronically. S/he understands the structure of linguistic theories, the way in which they are related, and also the empirical method of confirming or refuting them. S/he has an insight into the pragmatic and social context of language communication. The graduate’s training has prepared her or him for employment at specialized scientific, research, development, and tertiary education institutions. S/he can work in all spheres of public life where language and language communication play an important role.
