The Department of Management is well known for its excellence in research. It ranks among the top ten management departments in the world for faculty productivity over five years (2008-2012), based on the University of Texas at Dallas' survey of research publications in five premier management journals (Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, Organization Science, and Strategic Management Journal).
Our faculty are well supported in their pursuit of research interests across diverse topics in management; they are also able to take advantage of their location in Hong Kong to provide unique research insights on China.
The goal of the Department’s Ph.D. program is to develop outstanding scholars who are able to become major contributors to the frontiers of management knowledge by publishing their work in the best management journals and who are able to teach in major research universities around the world.
Our program provides solid training in the theory and methods of various fields of management. Apart from rigorous coursework covering organizational behavior, human resource management, organizational theory and strategic management, students gain hands-on experience in the research process through working with faculty members on research projects from the early stages of their study; some of these projects have resulted in top-tier journal publications for our students. Thus, the program offers students a highly stimulating learning environment and enables them to cultivate first-tier research skills for pursuing academic excellence.
The main areas of research include topics related to organizational theory and strategic management including corporate governance, entrepreneurship, institutions and status, organizational learning, social networks, alliances/joint venture success in China and multinational corporate strategy; topics related to human resources management and organizational behavior including social exchange processes, multiculturalism, behavioral ethics, leadership in Chinese context, workplace deviance, employment externalization, team processes and effectiveness, expatriate adjustment, goal orientation, creativity and diversity.
i. General Admission Requirements
Applicants seeking admission to a master's degree should have:
- obtained a bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution, or an approved equivalent qualification;
ii. English Language Admission Requirements
You have to fulfill English Language requirements with one of the following proficiency attainments*:
- TOEFL-iBT 80
- TOEFL-pBT 550
- TOEFL-Revised Paper-Delivered Test 60 (total scores for Reading, Listening and Writing sections)
- IELTS (Academic Module) Overall score: 6.0 and all sub-scores: 5.5
*If your first language is English, and your bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification was awarded by an institution where the medium of instruction was English, you will be waived from fulfilling the above English Language requirements.
