The programme boasts an impressive staff that includes political scientists, social and political theorists and historians. International and interdisciplinary research projects and collaborations are regularly undertaken and staff members are supported to build upon the existing expertise within the Department of Politics and European Studies (DPES) at Palacký University.
The three – year PhD program in political science is profiled as a modern political science study accentuating four key pillars:
- highly professional theoretical preparedness;
- a thorough methodological and analytical preparedness;
- the scientific-pedagogical erudition;
- professional language skills.
Research in politics, European Studies, and international relations is organized primarily around the below research areas and teams:

Graduate´s profile and employability:
A graduate of the doctoral programme should be a highly qualified expert - the political scientist, who has an exceptionally advanced and specialized knowledge in her/his field, she/he is able to conduct independent scientific research, participate in team research tasks and pursue original scientific knowledge. After the completion of studies is able to pursue an independent scientific or scientific-pedagogical career and, where appropriate, be ahead of a research team. Her/his scientific competencies include the ability to prepare professional scientific texts for publication, present their results at seminars and conferences. The graduate gains a very high-quality methodological training in both the theoretical level and in practical research, taking away the ability to use advanced quantitative and qualitative research methods. The graduate also acquires practice necessary for the educational activities of tertiary education in the field. She/he also commands the foreign languages necessary for research in the field. Knowledge of languages is also a means of making international contacts and activities at foreign scientific institutions. Last but not least, she/he must be able to popularize the field of study to the wider public, to apply the knowledge and skills in different environments and clearly communicate the knowledge to others.
A graduate shall be eligible to work in the academic sphere at scientific and scientific-pedagogical positions. Graduates are able to fulfill the tasks of the independent scientific workers and scientific-pedagogical workers. They will also be eligible for the high positions in ministries, the diplomatic service and the EU and other international institutions. They will also be able to work as highly qualified and specialized analysts for the political parties, political consultancies, interest groups, non-governmental sector and the media. Analytical skills, soft skills, and language competence then provide graduates with a strong flexibility in the labor market.
App. test requirements:
The candidate for doctoral studies in political science at the DPES must achieve a master's level or other equivalent education. Preferred education is in the field of political science, international relations, and European studies or in another social science or humanities field of study. The applicant is obliged to submit a detailed PhD research proposal at least two weeks before the start of the admission procedure. The admissions procedure takes the form of an oral interview with a committee composed of the members of the doctoral board.
