Profile of the Programme:

Aims and Objectives of the PhD in SW are as follow:

a) Develop students’ in-depth understanding and critical analysis of current literature and research methodology in the field of Social Work.

b) Develop students’ understanding and application of suitable research methodologies and scientific methods of inquiry to enable them to carry out their doctoral research project.

c) Enhance students’ research skills and facilitate the development of expertise relevant to their research specialization area.

d) Educate students on how to disseminate research findings, for example through publishing in academic journals and/or presenting their work in academic conferences and seminars.

e) Give students a broad understanding of research approaches and methods, which will enable them to read and comprehend a wide range of academic research papers to enhance their research competence and to facilitate the development of future research activities.

Career Prospects:

It is expected that the PhD in Social Work will attract not only graduates from Social Work Programmes around the globe but also professionals who have an interest in investigating social phenomena, behaviours and even planning innovative programmes from a social work perspective. Thus, the PhD in Social Work will accept applications from related disciplines such as psychology, nursing, sociology, criminology, social administration.

Graduation Requirements

The student must complete 180 ECTS and all programme requirements. The Programme has been structured into six (6) distinct phases (semesters), each consisting of 30 ECTS

A degree is awarded after the PhD candidate has successfully completed the viva examination according to the University regulations for PhD examinations.

Learning Outcomes

By the completion of the PhD in SW, students are expected to:

1) Comprehend basic principles of research design, including to have an understanding of how to conceptualize social work research, formulate researchable problems, and construct and test hypotheses;

2) Show competence in applying a range of research methods and tools;

3) Be able to successfully manage all the stages of a research project, including managing data, and conducting and disseminating research in a way that is consistent with both professional practice and the normal principles of research ethics;

4) Understand and appreciate the significance of alternative epistemological positions that provide the context for theory construction, research design and the selection of appropriate data analysis techniques;

5) Understand and apply the concepts of generalisability, validity, reliability and replicability, and to identify potential biases in the interpretation of research findings;

6) Develop a sound understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of a range of research methodologies and data collection methods;

7) Evidence competence in the use of quantitative and qualitative methodologies in social work and exhibit skills in the use of quantitative and qualitative data analysis methods;

8) Develop skills in the dissemination of findings to the wider academic community, initially through writing-up their Thesis and then through publishing their work in academic journals and/or giving presentations in academic conferences and seminars;

9) Acknowledge the impact of their own experiences, beliefs and culture on the processes and outcomes of inquiry, as well as the interpretation of findings, and through this process become reflexive researchers.
