The program is opened to students who finished the graduate study (master, MSc., mgr.) in biology and wish to continue their professional career in zoology. The participants are instructed in conceptual, methodical and technical issues of particular disciplines of zoology and trained in the practical investigation of particular scientific problems. The Ph.D. study is centered with the Ph.D. project which concept and actual performance are largely subjected to student's personal initiative and skills.

A broad spectrum of problems in animal systematics, phylogenetics, ecology and behavioral biology can be studied typically with a routine application of various modern methods and approaches (molecular phylogenetics and phylogeography, histochemical analyses, experimental morphology and evo-devo, quantitative behavioral analyses, neuroethology, acoustic biology etc.) combined with extensive field investigation, comparative studies and laboratory analyses. Almost all major groups of animals are covered, typically Acarina, Aranea, Psedoscorpionea, Mollusca, Heteroptera, Coleoptera, Diptera and several other groups of insects (including fossils) and all major clades of vertebrates (including fossils) as well. For current examples consult a list of the past and recent projects undertaken in the frame of the Ph.D. Program in Zoology (at the web page of the Program: web.natur.cuni.cz/zoologie).

Description of verification and evaluation criteria

The entrance exam is a one-round in the form of an interview. Based on a written request submitted electronically together with the application but no later than by 19 May 2019, the Dean may permit the entrance examination to take place via information and communication technology, but only for serious and documented reasons such as health or study abroad.

During the entrance examination, the candidate must demonstrate the technical and linguistic skills to study the given program, along with attributes necessary for scientific work. The examination is graded with a maximum of 100 points, of which 30 points are awarded as a bonus for giving a more specific idea of the study content and planned dissertation work in the voluntary application appendix, including the dissertation topic, a brief annotation, the anticipated supervising department and the consent of a specific supervisor to supervise such doctoral project.

Conditions for admission

Admission to Doctoral studies is conditioned by successful completion of a Master's study program.

Verification method: entrance exam
Confirmation date (of entrance exam) from: 17.06.2019 until: 28.06.2019
Alternative date (of entrance exam) from: 08.07.2019 until: 19.07.2019

Rules governing exemption from entrance examination

The entrance exam may be waived based on a written request from the candidate, provided they have successfully applied for a STARS project in the given academic year. Such a request, along with documentation that the conditions have been met, must be submitted (but not electronically) by 19 May 2019.

Career Prospect

Ph.D. program in zoology is aimed at graduate university students deeply interested in the science of zoology and capable of independent research in a particular zoological discipline. The study is centered with a Ph.D. project addressing the current issues of the discipline and consistent both in conceptual and methodological respects. The study is intended to promote skills in independent research, in establishing its contextual setting and producing relevant research outcomes, in particular by publishing. A graduate is able to conduct research, publish its results in international journals and teach in university courses. He/she can find a position in research and academic institutions in zoology and related disciplines as well as in organizations of conservation biology, in museums, zoos and/or in applied research.
