PhD of Science in Biological Sciences

University of Windsor, Graduate

Our Ph.D. program offers opportunities for advanced independent research and study, culminating in presentation and defense of a dissertation. The Ph.D. degree is normally completed in three to five years (a two-year minimum applies if students already hold a recognized M.Sc. degree). During this time, students take a minimum of three courses and present three departmental seminars.

Excellence in Graduate Research

The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Windsor offers outstanding graduate training for both Master’s and Doctoral level studies. Our faculty are outstanding biologists with international reputations as excellent researchers. Our graduates have achieved success at all levels of academia, industry, and government, and have also used their education as a springboard to success in professional programs including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, and physical therapy.

Graduate studies at University of Windsor are structured toward the advancement of research. Our programs are designed to provide flexibility in course requirements so that you can tailor your program to enhance your research training and productivity. The M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs engage research at every level of focus from molecular processes to the ecosystem, using microbial, plant, and animal systems.

Outstanding Facilities

The Biology Building occupies over 6,040 square meters of office and laboratory space. We have numerous special facilities that support outstanding research across the biological sciences. For studies in cell, molecular, and developmental biology:

  • Molecular biology core facility
  • State-of-the-art confocal microscopy facilities
  • Automated sequencers and DNA cloning technology
  • Microarray technology and a bioinformatics server
  • Cell culture rooms
  • Laboratories that meet international standards for recombinant DNA technology procedures

For studies in ecology, evolution, environmental, and behavioural biology:

  • Facilities for the care of mammals, birds, amphibians, and fishes
  • Incubators and environmental walk-in chambers
  • Access to research stations throughout Canada and the tropics
  • Multi-passenger vans and boats
  • An extensive greenhouse facility
  • An experimental fish hatchery
  • The Pelee Environmental Research Centre

The Department of Biological Sciences shares a close association with the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research (GLIER) which is housed on campus, and with the nearby Harrow Research Station of Agriculture Canada.

How to apply

Interested students should communicate directly with the professors in our department. Each professor maintains a webpage that explains their research interests and outlines graduate student positions available in their laboratories: www.uwindsor.ca/biology/graduate (click on the “Faculty and Staff” link).

Once you have communicated with a prospective supervisor, the application process to the graduate program at the University of Windsor can be completed online.

Admission Requirements

Applicants with an honours degree in Biological Sciences or related field and who have been judged to be outstanding students may be admitted directly into the Ph.D. program. Applicants holding an M.Sc. degree or equivalent from the University of Windsor or from another recognized university or college may be admitted to the Ph.D. program with advanced standing in course work as described below.

Program Requirements

Students may pursue one of the following fields within the PhD in Biological Sciences: 1) Molecular/Cellular Biology; 2) Ecology, Evolution, Environment, and Behaviour; and 3) Neuroscience and Behaviour.

Course Work: Students proceeding toward the Ph.D. degree will follow one of the programs given below:

1) Students proceeding directly to the Ph.D. from an Honours B.Sc. degree will be expected to:

  • comply with the general regulations;
  • attend all departmental seminars in Biological Sciences (formal presentations of visiting speakers; graduate student seminars, thesis defense presentations and dissertation defense presentations) each year of full-time registration;
  • present a departmental seminar in each year of enrollment (the dissertation defense may count as one of these);
  • successfully complete a minimum of three (3) graduate courses. With the approval of the Doctoral Committee, courses may be in a cognate area. Statistics 65-453 (Statistics for Life/Social Sciences) may be allowed for graduate credit;
  • complete a dissertation embodying the results of an original investigation;
  • defend the dissertation at a public lecture or seminar.

Students recommended and approved for transfer into the Ph.D. program after having completed between 12 and 15 months and one course (1) with at least an A- grade of a M.Sc. degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Windsor will normally receive one credit during the M.Sc. program and require two more credits at the Ph.D. level for a total of three (3) courses.

2) Students entering into a Ph.D. program with an M.Sc. degree will be expected to:

  • comply with the general requirements;
  • attend all departmental seminars in Biological Sciences (formal presentations of visiting speakers, graduate student seminars, thesis defense presentations and dissertation defense presentations) each year of full-time registration;
