The Architecture doctoral program offers education for future independent scientific researchers in the broadest area of architecture. Students are expected to demonstrate responsibility towards the cultural region and excellence at an international level. The fundamental aim of the program is to offer an in-depth understanding of the theoretical and methodological concepts deriving from the essence of architecture as a science and an art. The student should also be able to develop new knowledge in the area of architecture as a generic field and to transfer scientific achievements and new knowledge into architectural practice.

Subject to the stipulations of the General Academic Regulation G42, a master's degree is required for admission to studies for a Ph.D.

The Breuer Marcel Doctoral School offers doctoral programmes in architecture with a main focus on heritage protection and energy design.

The Doctor of Liberal Arts (DLA) in Architecture programme of the Doctoral School covers architecture and urban architecture programmes dealing with various aspects of planning (architecture of social spaces, architectural planning and design, production environment planning, residential environment planning, settlement planning).

The PhD in Architecture at Universidade Lusófona do Porto has as its main objective the training of researchers and teachers in the field of Architecture. The present proposal aims to satisfy the need for innovative and creative training in the country and in the Portuguese-speaking space in its area of expertise, Architecture.

The PHD in Historic Preservation was launched in 2017 and is oriented toward the training of future historic preservation scholars. The first of its kind in the United States, the program aims to expand the discipline’s range of intellectual entanglements and cultivate new paradigms for scholarly research, experimental practice, global action, and communication.

The Ph.D. in Urban Planning is focused on training individuals for future careers as teachers, researchers, policy-makers, and business entrepreneurs in and near the field of urban planning—in academia, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and think tanks. The program equips students with the theoretical and methodological expertise to address important contemporary issues, such as climate change and adaptation, built environment transformation, immigration and migration, housing and community development, and poverty and inequality. It is a highly competitive doctoral program, accepting only three candidates each year.

The aim of the Ph.D. in Regional Science and Economic Geography is to address issues related to local and regional development. The methodological perspective of research and teaching is multidisciplinary, combining regional and urban economics, economic and human geography, spatial planning, and sociology.
