A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is one of the highest degrees a student can obtain. In order to begin a doctoral program, students must have first received a bachelor and usually a master’s degree in a related field. Most PhD programs last about two years and can be earned in most disciplines except medicine.
So what is a PhD in Arts? This degree is usually offered in the field of humanities. After earning a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in a related field, students may study history, theory, or teaching methods regarding the arts. Students graduate with the information, coursework, and experience they need for a rewarding career in this field. An original dissertation concerning groundbreaking research, teaching methods, or products is often required before the degree is awarded.
Receiving a Doctorate in Arts can be very beneficial for graduates as they are able to study, learn, and gain hands-on experience within their area of concentration. It can mean greater career opportunities, the chance for a better salary, and the ability to be employed while doing something you enjoy.
The cost of a doctoral degree depends on a variety of factors such as the student’s country of origin, the location of the school, the amount of time a student is able to devote to their schooling, and the length of the program. Students are encouraged to investigate their potential school thoroughly in order to fully understand the cost of earning a degree.
Students who graduate with a PhD in Arts can find employment in a variety of career fields. Many graduates who earn their doctorate choose to return to academia and join the faculty at a university or college. Other individuals may choose to pursue a career in the visual arts, as artists themselves or as curators for museums. Graduates with a Doctorate in Arts may also become art historians and work with scholarly publications and institutions.
