The graduate study is organized by the department of physical and macromolecular chemistry in collaboration with the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Academy of Sciences, covering computational chemistry, quantum chemistry, and molecular modeling. The study is focused on biomacromolecules (DNA and proteins) and complex molecular systems. The following projects can be studied:
structure and dynamics of pairs and oligomers of DNA in the ground and excited electronic state,
interaction of DNA with proteins and ligands,
study of non-covalent interactions, particularly the regular and irregular hydrogen bonds,
stabilizing interactions in biomolecules - peptides and proteins and theoretical models of protein folding,
theoretical study of chemical reactivity and catalysis,
physical and chemical properties of molecular sieves,
development of methods for the description of the static and dynamic properties of weakly bound systems,
study of carbon nanostructures,
interaction of biologically relevant ions with hydrated proteins,
structure and dynamics of ions in solvents and at interfaces,
physical and chemical processes on atmospheric aerosols,

Chemistry of the Life Processes
Students entering this Program are trained in all fields of Biochemistry including bioenergetics, enzymology, molecular biology, protein chemistry and structure, immunochemistry, xenobiochemistry (biochemistry of foreign substances), chemical and cellular fundaments of the metabolic reactions etc. Students participating in the Program are actively involved in grant-supported research projects at the Department of Biochemistry of the Faculty of Science of Charles University Prague as well as in the collaborating laboratories at the Academy of Sciences of Czech Republic, and in regional and company laboratories. The studies in the Program are successfully completed after obtaining the English Language Certificate (issued by independent organizations), and after passing the State Doctoral Examination in biochemistry and two other subjects (usually suggested by the supervisor), and the defense of the PhD Thesis the important part of which is at least one publication in international peer-reviewed journal at which the candidate must be the principal author....
