A PhD, also known as a Doctor of Philosophy degree, is a doctorate awarded by a university to the academic who has met all necessary qualifications and can now be considered a doctor in his or her academic field.

A PhD degree is the highest degree students can earn in any field of study. Rigorous and intense, PhD programs are available only to students who have completed master's degree program, applied to a particular PhD study course and been accepted by administrators overseeing the PhD program.

Education in the United Kingdom is a devolved matter with each of the countries of the United Kingdom having separate systems under different governments: the UK Government is responsible for England, and the Scottish Government, the Welsh Government and the Northern Ireland Executive are responsible for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, respectively.

England is the largest of the four "home nations" that make up the United Kingdom. It is also the most populous of the four with almost 52 million inhabitants (roughly 84% of the total population of the UK).

Doctoral Degrees in Business in England in United Kingdom. PhD Economics A PhD is the most advanced form of postgraduate study. It is awarded on the successful completion of a programme of supervised research and is assessed by a verbal examination and final thesis. The Economics PhD offers students the opportunity to study economics to PhD level, with expert supervision and additional research training. The programme consists of a combination of taught courses and supervised independent research, leading to the completion of a PhD thesis. Because academic staff conduct world-leading research across a wide range of subjects, the school can offer expert supervision in most areas of the discipline. Students are allocated two supervisors and, while we make every effort to match applicants to staff on the basis of their research interests, it is not always possible due to staff capacity constraints. Regular annual and quarterly reviews are held to ensure smooth progress of the research work. During the first year, students complete taught courses in order to acquire the necessary skills and background knowledge for their research. Some are compulsory and some are recommended by their supervisors. All students take the PhD Economics Research Methods module and at least one other module. They also undertake research and generic skills training, provided by the School of Economics and the Graduate School, and start work on their research. From the second year, students focus in more detail on their research. Training is also provided for the preparation of articles for submission... [-]
