Ph.D. in Applied Micro and Nanosystems
Micro and nanotechnology has become a very broad field, spanning everything from physics to materials science, chemistry and electronics, and more.
The Ph.D. program in Applied Micro- and Nanosystems educates scientists with broad knowledge of micro and nano system technologies. This becomes an increasingly important part of our everyday life, in all sorts of "smart systems", as for example sensors integrated into mobile phones, equipment for medical diagnosis, for monitoring the environment and for instrumentation in industrial processes.
Academically it builds on a broad range of engineering and science: Electronics, product design/engineering, material-learning, computer science and chemical processing, and basic physics. The research training ranging from design and mathematical modeling with advanced software tools, the manufacturing, and characterization of national leader clean room laboratories....

Understanding the working principles of living organisms and soft matter systems from the basic equations ruling the dynamics of atoms and molecules was considered science fiction until a few years ago, and biophysics was almost unanimously considered a battlefield for phenomenologists. Nowadays, applying rigorous physics to biological processes is no longer a dream. What’s more, it is becoming clear that the next few decades will be the golden age for the “theory of life”, which is expected to undergo the same accelerating growth experienced by other physics disciplines in the past century.
Young scientists attracted by the opportunity to develop and apply concepts, models and methods to explore the still uncharted territory of quantitative biology can take up this challenge in our Ph.D. programme in Physics and Chemistry of Biological Systems....

Ph.D. in Environmental Toxicology
The rapid development of many countries within the region has led to the widespread use of chemicals in Industry, Agriculture, Public Health, as well as in our daily lives. This has resulted in significant chemical contamination and deterioration of the environment, with unavoidable impacts on the economy, society, and the health of the people. In addressing these problems, there is a pressing need for experts in the field of Environmental Toxicology, which is a field requiring knowledge in several inter-related sciences. In keeping with the national policy to generate high-quality personnel in the fields of Science and Technology, CGI thus offers a graduate program in Environmental Toxicology to address this need to train a new generation of scientists that will become the driving force for the country, and region, in the years to come....

NOWNano DTC: The North West Nanoscience Doctoral Training Centre
NowNano DTC students undertake a four-year doctoral training programme. A major aim of the DTC is to create a cohort of researchers that are able to draw on knowledge from a broad spectrum of sciences and to work in interdisciplinary teams. The challenge is to enable our students to understand the different languages and philosophies of disciplines as diverse as theoretical physics & astronomy and medicine. The aim of the first six months of the programme is to expose students to the full breadth of nanoscience and nanotechnology and to provide them with the skills and background knowledge that they will need during their Ph.D. projects in order to understand the diverse concepts and knowledge that they will inevitably encounter. To this end, the programme includes not only lecture courses and directed self-study (inquiry-based learning) but also extended (12 weeks-long) laboratory projects covering different aspects of nanoscience and nanotechnology. Also during this time, students will have an opportunity to learn about the available Ph.D. research projects through presentations by potential supervisors and visits to research labs. It is expected that many projects will be interdisciplinary, with co-supervision by academics from different Schools/Departments, providing students with access to the world-class facilities....
