The study program provides advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of computational mathematics, which deals with the solution of mathematical problems describing phenomena in natural, technical and social sciences. The study is focused on the understanding of problems in a wider context.

The study includes the theoretical aspects of the methods of computational mathematics as well as a computer solution of the mathematical tasks motivated by practical problems. The students are prepared for the development of the field itself as well as to employ the achieved knowledge in solving mathematical problems in natural and applied sciences.

Computational linguistics is an interdisciplinary scientific field involving mathematics (including topics such as discrete mathematics, statistics, and probability), computer science (e.g. algorithmization, machine learning, artificial intelligence) and classical linguistics (e.g. morphology, syntax, language typology). Computational linguistics investigates language from a formal point of view, and it aims at developing methods that could be used in software applications in the field of Natural Language Processing, in which languages in their spoken or written form are handled.

It is an interdisciplinary study program which connects classical physics (particularly continuum mechanics and thermodynamics) with mathematical analysis and numerical mathematics. The student should go through the construction or understanding of the physical model, its mathematical analysis up to its numerical solution.

Due to the complexity of problems studied both in the research and in the praxis a closed collaboration among specialist from different areas is needed. Typically, the physicists and engineers construct the models and mathematicians study the mathematical properties of the models and solve the models numerically. These specialists often use different languages to describe the same problem. The graduates of this program should be able to communicate with all of them and are therefore prepared to lead such groups. Moreover, they should also be prepared to solve simpler problems by themselves: from the construction of the model through its analysis up to its numerical solution.... [-]

The Ph.D. program is a four-year program. The format for the degree consists of coursework and a thesis. The student must pass a written and an oral comprehensive examination within the first two years of the program.

The thesis is the most significant component of work towards the degree and involves original research. The first step for any prospective student is to select a potential supervisor and in consultation with the supervisor, organize a research plan including a possible thesis topic, before admission to the program. Faculty research interests are a critical factor in this preliminary decision.

The department is attempting to expand and strengthen its research activities and graduate students will play an important role in this endeavor. Almost all faculty members in the department receive external or internal funding to support their research programs.... [-]

PhD in Computational Sciences and Engineering Graduate education in computational science and engineering (CMSE) at Koç University is offered through an interdisciplinary program among the Departments of the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering. In this program graduate, students are trained on modern computational science techniques and their applications to solve scientific and engineering problems. New technological problems and associated research challenge heavily depend on computational modeling and problem-solving. Because of the availability of powerful and inexpensive computers, model-based computational experimentation is now a standard approach to analysis and design of complex systems where real experiments can be expensive or infeasible. Graduates of the CMSE Program should be capable of formulating solutions to computational problems through the use of multidisciplinary knowledge gained from a combination of classroom and laboratory experiences in basic sciences and engineering. Individuals with B.S. degrees in biology, chemistry, physics, and related engineering disciplines should apply for graduate study in the CMSE Program.Research areas of interest... [-]

Models, mathematics, statistics, data, and algorithms are the foundations of our digital world. Computational methods and mathematical analysis are increasingly used for simulation, prediction, data evaluation, analysis, risk assessment, development, and optimization, in virtually every field of Science.

The Ph.D. in “Computational Mathematics and Decision Sciences” aims at offering graduate students solid skills in Computational Mathematics, Computational Physics, Scientific Computing, Statistics, Decision Sciences, Optimization, Machine Learning, as well as an interdisciplinary view of Applied Mathematics, Physics and decision processes under uncertainty. The program gives a solid theoretical and computational grounding for high-level research in universities, international research institutions, and industry.... [-]

Doctoral programme on speciality "Mathematical and Computer Modeling" is created for further independent research and defence of a doctoral dissertation at the university. Within the frameworks of the course, PhD students study classical and modern approaches of mathematics such as methods of functional analysis, mathematical models of physical processes, a more advanced course of differential equations, in particular, derived equations, etc. In addition, courses on high-productive calculations and computer modelling are given. Thesis Board for the defence of doctoral dissertations on speciality "Mathematical and Computer Modeling" is functioning at our university.
